Context: The unprecedented expansion of Cloud Computing services and Internet of things (IoT) combined with the recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data analytics techniques is opening the door for new breeds of intelligent services and applications. Such services and applications require a large computing capacity to perform well. Unfortunately, in dynamic and mobile environments, characterized by intermittent connectivity, it becomes challenging to run such services and applications with a guaranteed performance, especially when it is not possible to rely on any fixed infrastructure giving access to cloud platforms with powerful servers.
In this project, we consider a Mobile Ad hoc Cloud (MAdoC), a dynamic cloud made of interconnected IoT and mobile devices with no dependence on a fixed infrastructure. MAdoC leverages recent technological advances in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Big Data analytics, and Machine-Learning techniques to allow processing intensive applications.

Objective: In heterogeneous MAdoCs, the characteristics of the nodes and the wireless links significantly change over time and space. In this Ph.D. position, the student will first investigate potential correlations that exist among node and link metrics using statistical analysis. The statistical analysis will cover the spatial and temporal dimensions and will be conducted using simulations and real-world datasets. Based on the identified correlations, the student will then introduce and evaluate algorithms for the prediction of these metrics.

Collaborations and Scholarship
The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the industrial partner Ultra – Intelligence and Communications (https://www.ultra.group/gb/our-business-units/intelligence-communications/).

A scholarship is granted for four years.

Qualifications and Requirements
The position requires:
- A master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
- Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills in English
- Solid knowledge in: i) networking, ii) machine learning and/or optimization
- Strong coding skills
