We have two Ph.D. research assistant openings (salary and full tuition waiver) in Fall 2021 on sensing, estimation, and control of extreme unmanned aircraft systems in the research group of Associate Prof. Haiyang Chao in the Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Kansas (https://cusl.ku.edu/Main_Page). The successful candidates will work on developing nextGen autonomous aerospace vehicles to operate in challenging extreme environments (e.g. wildfire, urban cities, or in wake vortices).

Potential research topics include:
(1) wind and turbulence sensing and estimation using single or multiple unmanned aircraft,
(2) modeling of turbulence effect on aircraft motion and gust suppression control,
(3) UAS based disaster remote sensing and in-situ sensing (e.g., wildfire, tornado/hail damage).

Applicants should hold a B.S. or M.S. degree in related fields (Aerospace Eng., Electrical Eng., Mechanical Eng., Computer Science, Math). Students with experiences on Remote Controlled (RC) airplanes and Paparazzi /Pixhawk autopilot are especially welcomed to apply.
