Department summary

Transportation Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental is focused on addressing transportation's environmental, social, and economic aspects, cultivating sustainable and inclusive solutions for a greener future. The team's collective research work covers a wide range of areas, including the planning and design of street and highway systems, transit systems, active transportation routes, and railroads. Additionally, they evaluate and implement innovative technologies, traffic management strategies, sustainable transportation practices, and resilient measures to handle disruptions.

Position summary

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher position in the area of transportation engineering to work under Dr. Karim El-Basyouny, Professor of Transportation Engineering and City of Edmonton Research Chair in Urban Traffic Safety. The focus of his research program is on remote sensing applications in roadway infrastructure digitization. Research opportunities include intelligent/computational design, infrastructure mapping, semantic segmentation of LiDAR data, automated travel modelling and testing, and predictive control/operation. Research objects cover LiDAR mapping technologies, scanning system design and roadway and roadside measurements, and wayside feature detection. The candidate will have access to state-of-art research environments (software and hardware) and gain practical knowledge by working with government partners.

Duties:

  • Design experiments, research methods, data collection protocols, and standards.
  • Co-ordinate data collection and analysis of results.
  • Assist in computer implementation and coordinate computer programming.
  • Assist in the writing of research papers, preparation of presentations, and publications
  • Present research results in meetings, seminars, scientific conferences, and/or related settings.
  • Foster communication with off-campus partners.
  • Prepare research proposals and reports.

Assist with administrative-related duties of the program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Engineering or Computing Science with a solid understanding of the urban transportation sector.
  • Highly skilled in simulations and modelling, computational design, machine learning, and data analytics.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the application of LiDAR data for road infrastructure.
  • A strong track record of refereed journal publications.
  • The ability to work independently and together with other team members. Need to be highly self-initiative.

Strong written and oral communication skills.
