This is an exciting time to join the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), a dynamic academic community at The Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) dedicated to excellence in education, research and innovation. The Professor of Software Engineering or Professor of Computer Science will bring a passion for teaching and working with undergraduate students and support the growth of established undergraduate computing programs and/or a newly developed minor in Cybersecurity. MSOE is the recipient of significant investments to support its academic mission, including the construction of the $34M Dwight and Dian Diercks Computational Science Hall that houses the SE and CS programs. This is also home to Rosie, MSOE’s supercomputer, an NVIDIA GPU-accelerated AI supercomputer, which provides a unique experience for both faculty and students.

MSOE values a broad range of scholarly activities and faculty are highly collaborative; integrating real-world experience into the classroom, sharing course development materials, and coordinating efforts to leverage shared expertise and perspectives to optimize learning. At MSOE, all faculty, especially junior faculty, are supported through established mentoring and collaborative pedagogical development. Faculty enjoy small class sizes, hands-on laboratories for working closely with students, and support for sustained professional development. The department maintains strong relationships with numerous businesses and academic institutes, which guide applied projects, undergraduate research, and curriculum development. 

This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctorate by the beginning date of the appointment (Fall 2024)
  • Expertise in any field of Software Engineering or Computer Science
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Networking, Design Patterns, DevOps, Human-machine Interfaces, AR/VR, Applied Machine Learning, and Databases
  • Industry experience

About the Institution

The Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) was founded in 1903 and is an independent, non-profit university in Milwaukee with about 2,700 students. Located on a 23-acre campus in the heart of the vibrant downtown neighborhood of East Town, MSOE offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a variety of engineering disciplines, computer science, actuarial science, nursing, business, user experience and construction management. About the Department

The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department is the oldest and largest academic department at MSOE. MSOE has made significant investment in the EECS department including the construction of the $34M Dwight and Dian Diercks Computational Science Hall that houses the Software Engineering (SE) and Computer Science (CS) programs. The hall provides state-of-the-art facilities for students and researchers to explore various aspects of computational science, including high-performance computing, data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Diercks Hall is home to Rosie, MSOE’s supercomputer, which is an NVIDIA GPU-accelerated AI supercomputer with three NVIDIA DGX-1s, two NVIDIA DGX H100 servers, and 20 servers each with four NVIDIA T4 GPUs. The nodes are joined together by Mellanox networking fabric and share 300 TB of network-attached storage. EECS has 14 engineering laboratories, the EECS Technical Support Center and close industry ties, providing students with what they need to be successful.

Living in the Area

Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin with a population over 575,000 on the western shore of Lake Michigan, about 90 miles north of Chicago. The city has a diverse population and a rich cultural scene, with attractions such as the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Harley-Davidson Museum, and the Milwaukee Public Museum. Often called the “City of Festivals” the city is known for its numerous festivals, including Summerfest, one of the largest in the world. Countless cultural and other activities are all within walking distance from campus, including shopping, theaters, museums, restaurants, world-class cultural institutions, parks, public markets and professional sporting venues—including the Fiserv Forum, home of the world champion Milwaukee Bucks whose championship parade took place next to campus. Milwaukee has over 150 state and county parks and 130 miles of bike trails. The Milwaukee RiverWalk spans nearly 3 miles along the Milwaukee River, taking you through downtown Milwaukee. Within blocks of MSOE, neighborhoods are filled with charming 19th century houses integrated with apartment buildings and condos, and Lake Michigan as the beautiful backdrop.

The cost of living in Milwaukee is 12% lower than the US average and with housing costs 46.5% less expensive than the national average, the city offers plenty of affordable housing options. Milwaukee is known for its brewing traditions and is home to several major breweries, including MillerCoors and Pabst Brewing Company. The city is a hub to national and global leaders of industry, health care and business including Johnson Controls, Northwestern Mutual, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, ManpowerGroup, Kohl’s Corporations and Rockwell Automation.
