AI IN SOCIAL AND ENGINEERING SYSTEMS FACULTY POSITION
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Cambridge, MA

The MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) is seeking a candidate for tenure-track faculty position starting in July 2019 or on a mutually agreed date thereafter. Appointments will be at the assistant or untenured associate professor level. Appointments will be made in partnership with MIT departments and IDSS. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research, Economics or a related field by the start of their employment. Faculty duties include teaching, research, supervision of graduate and undergraduate students and service to the Institute and profession. The search is focused on the general area of AI as it interacts with physical or social systems. We will consider candidates with backgrounds and interests in the general areas of networks, statistics, machine learning and data-driven decision making as they pertain to complex societal challenges. The research is expected to rigorously highlight the role of inference, learning, adaptation, or real time decision making on the performance and resilience of such systems. Our focus will be particularly on candidates whose work has strong foundation in one or more social science disciplines. Examples of such research include:

1) Smart services, with specific focus on creating data-driven solutions to intelligent infrastructures (energy, transportation, finance, commerce) where both social and economic systems are at play. Research addressing issues related to robustness, security and privacy of smart/intelligent services and cyber-physical systems are also emphasized.

2) Foundations of decision making, learning, inference and computation in multi-agent social and engineering systems. Topics of interest include interaction of such systems via real-time markets and real-time decision making, understanding the social behavior of such systems and formal investigations of fairness, ethics and privacy.

We are interested in candidates who have the vision and interest to contribute to the research frontier of the emerging interdisciplinary fields mentioned above.

Candidates must register with the School of Engineering Faculty Search website and must submit application materials electronically to this website. Candidate applications should include a description of professional interests and goals in both teaching and research. In view of the joint nature of the position, candidates are encouraged to identify a home department (from the School of Engineering). Each application should include a curriculum vitae and the names and addresses of three or more individuals who will provide letters of recommendation. Letter writers should submit their letters directly to MIT, preferably on the website or by mailing to the address below. Please submit a complete application by January 1, 2019.

Send all materials not submitted on the website to: idss-ai-ses-search@mit.edu

MIT is an equal opportunity employer. Women and underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply.
