The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Houston invites applicationsfor a full- time, tenure-track faculty position in the broad area of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Information Science. All qualified candidates are invited to apply at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, with encouragement for those with multidisciplinary interests.

Qualifications:
The applicant must have an earned Ph.D. in civil/environmental/aerospace/mechanical/electrical engineering or a related field in computer science with expertise in the broad area of artificial intelligence and quantum science. We are particularly interested in candidates who harness these techniques to answer scientific questions related to current US research priorities including the application of AI to cybersecurity, autonomy and robotics, data analysis, and the study of quantum sensing, communications and computing. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with the current CEE faculty cluster (C. Glennie, V. Hoskere, K. Nakshatrala and N. Ekhtari) and others across the University, whose expertise includes quantum positioning, navigation and timing, machine learning, large language models, and natural language processing. The University of Houston was recently awarded its largest research grant in history—a $63.5 million award from the U.S. Department of Defense—to advance quantum technology, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The CEE cluster are integral to this initiative, for which C. Glennie serves as principal investigator. The appointment is anticipated at the assistant or associate professor level. The successful applicant will contribute to teaching, research, and service activities within the Department, College, and University and be a part of a focused team of faculty members and research scientists that secures externally funded research grants and supports pedagogy within the multi-disciplinary graduate research programs in the Cullen College of Engineering. The anticipated start date of this appointment is September 1, 2026. University, College and Department: The University of Houston is in a park-like campus a few minutes from downtown Houston with over 39,000 undergraduate students and 8,000 graduate students. The CEE department currently has 23 tenured or tenure-track faculty members with over 300 undergraduates, and over 130 graduate students. The Cullen College of Engineering is ranked #44 in the 2025 U.S. News & World Reports list of top public engineering programs across the nation. The College oversees state-of-the-art supercomputing facilities in partnership with the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Science Institute at the University of Houston and offers a college-wide MS program in Engineering Data Science and AI with about 300 students. Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S. with over 6.8 million in population in the greater Houston area. It is the “energy capital of the world” and houses the largest medical center in the world. The greater Houston area offers state-of-the-art recreational facilities, world-class arts and cultural activities, excellent schools, and affordable housing.
