Postdoctoral Scholar, Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a postdoctoral scholar candidate with a start date of August 1, 2020, or as soon as possible. Candidates should have Ph. D. level experience in thermal systems engineering, experimental heat transfer methods and applied controls with a strong track record of conducting high-quality research in relevant topic areas.

The successful candidate will lead the thermal and controls development, prototype productions, and characterization of a chemical fuel based warming system that will enable spacecraft and scientific equipment to survive and operate through the lunar night cycle. The candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of investigators from the Multiscale Thermal Fluids and Energy Laboratory (MTFE), the Pangborn Advanced Controls (PAC) Laboratory, and industry partners. The goal of the research program is to rapidly mature this thermal management technology for injection into lunar flight missions in the coming years.

The successful candidate will be expected to take a leadership role in this research project, define for themselves tasks and paths to achieve project objectives, and author novel publications. The candidate will also be expected to mentor students, fulfill project administrative functions, and assist in proposal development. The candidate is expected to work diligently to achieve project goals and maintain the deliverable timelines and milestones.

For full consideration, the applicant should have the following qualifications: a Ph. D. in a relevant engineering discipline, experience in developing and experimentally characterizing thermal-fluids and controls systems, ability to translate prototype hardware to mature and robust designs and eagerness to collaborate with industry partners in a fast-paced R&D effort.

The appointment will be for one year with the possibility for renewal. Applicants should submit their CV, cover letter, and references. The review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
