Job Description

The Biomedical Engineering department at Stevens Institute of Technology is seeking qualified applicants for part-time adjunct teaching assignments for BME Senior Design course. The BME Senior Design courses integrate learning and technical design with entrepreneurial thinking to create an environment that fosters innovation. The course guides the student group to identify and address problems with technical, entrepreneurial, humanitarian value and substantial societal impact. This course cumulates the Senior Design capstone to be exhibited at Innovation Expo for the biomedical engineering students.

Senior Design courses support the BME senior design projects in varying ways to develop business ideas for their projects and to successfully convey their ideas to potential investors and other stakeholders. It is a practical course where students will develop the basic documentation and skills necessary to understand, manage, communicate and present their project from a business perspective.

Early on the emphasis will be on the management of the project and the revision of the design based on prospective users/stakeholders feedback. Students will be asked to identify and assess the business potential of the technology/ technical solution/system that the students are developing in their senior design. Students will learn how to assess this potential among several, non-technical dimensions, including the identification and analysis of the target market, the assessment of the competition, and the economic feasibility and financial prospects of a new venture created around the product or technology that is being developed in the senior design. To culminate their understanding of the challenges of startup processes, the students will develop overview Executive Summaries and be able to describe their project from a business perspective, not just the technical perspective, as well as, present a project/elevator pitch and compete at the Pitch Competition. These classes meet twice a week for the 14-week semester.

Instructors are required to prep before class, follow a syllabus and ensure consistent learning outcomes and will be responsible for all grading.  All adjunct instructors must attend weekly or bi-weekly conference calls/meetings with instructor pool to ensure consistency across all sections.

Adjunct positions are on a semester-by-semester contract basis. Adjunct faculty will be responsible for teaching one or more undergraduate courses in a manner consistent with the specific course content description. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold office hours appropriate for the course(s) being taught. Assignments may include day or evening courses and will be in person at our Hoboken Campus.

Candidates will be evaluated on suitability of their academic preparation, past teaching experience, and potential for providing high quality instruction to undergraduate students.
