Multiple graduate research assistant openings are available in the Micro/nano-Engineering
Laboratory at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. The positions are for Ph.D. in
Computational Engineering (starting salary range:$22.000-$25.000). Projects are in
collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Students interested in fluid dynamics,
heat transfer, material science, nanoscale transport phenomena, or molecular and interfacial
phenomena are welcome to apply. Prior experience in computational work and programming
skills are valued. If interested, send your resume and transcript to
utc.nanoengineering@gmail.com. These positions come with full funding, including stipend,
health care, and tuition waiver. Nanotechnology offers groundbreaking applications in physical and natural sciences. Recent
advances provide revolutionary nano-materials/systems whose properties can be customized.
The future of science and engineering is expected to be shaped by nano-materials. As described
by Richard Feynman, arranging atoms to manipulate materials became increasingly important
in the last decade. Understanding the fluid dynamics, heat transfer and surface chemistry
at the nanoscale is of great importance. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is the second largest school in the University
of Tennessee System, serving a diverse student body of more than 11,000 undergraduate and
graduate students through five academic colleges. Since its founding in 1886, UTC has
developed a reputation for excellence build on an unusual blend of the private and public
traditions of American higher education. Chattanooga, the fourth largest city in the state,
is located in Southeast Tennessee near the border of Georgia. The city has received national
recognition for the “renaissance of its beautiful downtown and redevelopment of its riverfront”.
Chattanooga also has the fastest internet in the country. Home to the first Gig Internet in
the United States, Chattanooga has a 100% fiber network that links every home and business in
a 600-square mile area. Attractions such as the Tennessee Aquarium, Lookout Mountain, Civil
War battlefield sites, the African American Museum, and the Appalachian Trail bring thousands
of people to the area, as do events like the Riverbend Festival, Nightfall, Jazzanooga, and
the Southern Writers Conference. People who love the outdoors use Chattanooga as a base for
hang-gliding, bass fishing, mountain climbing and caving expeditions; the beautiful Smoky
Mountains and Tennessee River support the greatest variety of flora of any area in the
United States. Chattanooga also has a long and rich past with regard to diversity. Chattanooga is
also just a two-hour (or less) drive from Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville, and Birmingham.
Whether it’s Chattanooga’s ideal geographical location with comfortable temperatures year-round
to suit an active lifestyle, its cultural and culinary diversity, reasonable cost of living,
world-class healthcare facilities, reputable educational institutions like UTC, or countless
other reasons, it’s no wonder more and more people are choosing to make Chattanooga their home.
