Lecturer (Teaching) Mechanics and Design
The appointment will be on UCL Grade 8.
Teaching and Education
To contribute to the taught curriculum of the Department on the areas of solid mechanics and engineering design. This post includes shared responsibility for designing, managing, teaching and assessing practical laboratories and workshops. To increase the content of practical engineering within the curriculum, supporting staff with the implementation of this for the Integrated Engineering Programme. To supervise individual and group projects at undergraduate and postgraduate level. To review new learning and teaching technologies on an ongoing basis and to develop and deliver training provision, in conjunction with UCL Arena, to support the implementation of new teaching technologies and methodologies within the Department. To contribute to the management of the Department by actively participating in committees (e.g. the Departmental Teaching Committee) and working groups as well as attending other staff meetings as required.
In addition, the candidate will be encouraged and supported: To publish outcomes of work in relevant recognised engineering education or technical research journals. To apply for additional funding from internal and external sources to support and extend their work. To become a Chartered Engineer, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, if not already.
The successful applicant will be a natural and effective communicator first and foremost, with an interest in Higher Education and a clear understanding of the professional education marketplace and industry training needs. The post holder will have a excellent level of specialist technical background in at least one area of solid mechanics or design, and a very good knowledge of the other. In addition to teaching technical content as required, they will lead on the design and development of practical activities in these subject areas.
