Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering (CMET) focuses on sustainable utilization of raw materials, designing and developing more efficient processes for new materials and products. We as chemical engineers contribute to the future society with sustainable processes enabling circular economy and bioeconomy. Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering is one of the three departments in the School of Chemical Engineering at Aalto University.
The department is in a key position in research related to chemical engineering, materials technology, metals processing, efficient energy technologies and digitalization of these. Our core competences include unit operations and processes, hydro- and pyro-metallurgy, catalytic processes and materials, polymer engineering, process control and process systems engineering.

The position can be filled at any level of the Aalto tenure track system (assistant, associate or full professor). The position is full-time and is dependent on the positioning on the tenure track, either on fixed or permanent term.
Job description
Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering launches a new tenure track professor position in the field of Process Systems Engineering. The position is linked to Plant Design, Process Control and Automation, and Digitalization within Chemical Engineering.
We expect that you will contribute to our teaching in our courses related to process systems engineering, plant and process design, modeling, optimization and production planning. Your research focus areas in chemical engineering could be
- Multiscale modelling and control
- Simulation-based process design and synthesis
- Computational tools and physics-aware machine learning, hybrid systems, and data analytics (AI/ML/optimization/simulation)
- Multi-level system optimization and connected systems
Other potentially relevant areas are
- Energy integration
- Sustainable supply chains (circular economy)
- Combining economic and ecological targets
Your role and goals
Global transition towards more sustainable processes requires investigations and development based on artificial intelligence tools and educate competent people with the appropriate skills. Your role will be significant in reaching these goals as a research leader and teacher.
The applicant ought to possess competence to lead research and teaching in process systems engineering. As a professor at the Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering you will establish and lead your own research group. You will be responsible for education in the field of process systems engineering at BSc, MSc, and doctoral level.
Your experience and ambitions
We are looking for candidates possessing:
- a doctoral degree in chemical engineering or related field
- a research background supporting the topic of process systems engineering
- relevant teaching experience
- a strong publication record
- experience in international collaborations and projects
- documented experience in obtaining research funding
The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research work, teaching and academic leadership and activity in the scientific community. Industrially oriented applicants are also welcome and encouraged to reflect their industrial and societal impact.
