The Department of Mechanical Engineering at American University of Sharjah invites applications for regular and visiting faculty appointments at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level. We are seeking enthusiastic and dynamic candidates in all the areas of mechanical engineering. The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree and an earned doctorate in mechanical engineering or related fields. Teaching experience in an American model of higher education and/or work experience in North American industry are highly desirable.

The successful candidates will join an established and growing department with a great ambition to serve the industrial needs of UAE and the Gulf region. The department currently has 18 full-time faculty positions, 5 laboratory instructors, 460 undergraduate students, and 34 graduate students. AUS is located in the Emirate of Sharjah, one of the seven emirates within the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is a highly diversified, technologically advanced and secure country with an excellent reputation for tourism, business and engineering. The university, founded in 1997, is a private, not-for profit, coeducational institution with a healthy mix between teaching and research activities.

Following the AUS research strategic plan, approved by the Board of Trustees, the university had recently established four institutes and two centers: the Bioscience and Bioengineering Research Institute (BBRI), the Materials Science and Engineering Research Institute (MSERI), the Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI) and the Gulf Environments Research Institute (GERI), the High-Performance Computing Center (HPCC) and the Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC). These institutes and centers have recently commenced the work outlined in the strategic plan, including laboratory renovation, equipment purchasing and installation, research program initiation, PhD program development, outreach activities and more. More information on the research institutes can be found at www.aus.edu/research.

Faculty hired for the visiting positions will be primarily focused on teaching. The regular teaching load for a visiting faculty position is three courses per semester. Candidates with ability to teach in multiple areas of mechanical engineering and across engineering majors are especially encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates for the regular positions will work collaboratively in the department and within and across the institutes and colleges/school to conduct research, advise students and teach in the BS, MS and proposed PhD degree programs. The applicant should clearly state his/her preference to associate with one of the above-mentioned research institutes and this shall be supported by the research record and the research statement. Successful applicants will have a reduced teaching load and will be expected to establish high level, active research programs supported by internal and external funding sources. Areas of emphasis for these positions are: 3D printing, cyber-physical systems and aerospace applications. However, all related fields will be considered.

Additional information about the university and the Department of Mechanical Engineering can be found at www.aus.edu. More information about the location of AUS is available here.

Interested candidates should fill out an application form and upload the required documents in a PDF format using the Employment Application Portal. The selected candidate is expected to assume duties around mid-August 2019. Applications will be reviewed after December 1, 2018 and the review will continue until the position is filled. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an initial Skype-based interview.
