2020 National Science Foundation Fellowships available at Clemson University
The Clemson University THINKER (Technology-Human Integrated Knowledge Education and Research) program has fellowship openings for graduate students (Master’s and PhD levels) in the College of Engineering, Computing, and Applied Sciences (CECAS) engineering programs. (NOTE: Candidates must apply in parallel with a department in CECAS, as well as the THINKER program directly since these applications are considered together.) All relevant engineering backgrounds will be considered for the Spring 2020 semester.
THINKER is a graduate traineeship funded by the National Science Foundation, where participating students in engineering graduate programs study collaboration, manufacturing, human behavior, and the combination of big data and its analysis from these sources. The program also offers special industry-integrated workshops in career readiness and planning.
THINKER research investigates the complex interactions between humans and the Industrial Internet of Things. Master’s and PhD engineering students work alongside undergraduate and technical college students to tackle industry-sponsored problems focusing on human and system research to solve complex manufacturing challenges. This research will lead to the development of manufacturing technology such as wearable feedback devices for use in assembly/production, and more efficient integration of human generated data with machine generated data in control systems to strengthen continuous improvement.
Successful applicants will be U.S. citizens possessing an undergraduate degree in an engineering field and research interests in the areas of automotive advanced manufacturing, human integration with technology, and related engineering contexts.
THINKER Fellows complete courses in multiple engineering areas along with professional/career development workshops and participate in innovative collaborative research projects. Projects are based in real-world challenges working in tandem with regional manufacturers. Through this interaction, Fellows gain contacts in the global manufacturing community leading to excellent employment and post-doctoral opportunities.
If you wish to be considered, please submit a relevant departmental application along with an application to the THINKER program. (Access the application through our website at www.cecas.clemson.edu/thinker and click Apply Now.)
