The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department ( at The Ohio State University invites applications for an open rank teaching faculty appointment within our Nuclear Engineering program.

Position Overview

The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department invites applicants for a professional practice (non-tenure-track) faculty position in nuclear engineering at all rank levels. We will consider all qualified applicants across the fields of nuclear, mechanical, and aerospace engineering, with particular interest in those who can teach a broad range of nuclear engineering courses. Successful candidates at the senior level will demonstrate ability to lead development of undergraduate degree program in nuclear engineering to complement educational and research activities of existing nuclear engineering graduate program.

Visa sponsorship will be offered if an international candidate is selected. 

Performance Objectives

  • Contribute to teaching activities in the Nuclear Engineering program.
  • Teach and mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Participate in service to the university and the international research community.
  • For senior level position, lead establishment of undergraduate nuclear engineering program.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Required
    • Applicants must have earned a doctorate or masters with 10 years of relevant experience in nuclear engineering or a closely related engineering or science discipline.
    • Ability to teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in an inclusive way (all learners are valued and feel a sense of belonging)

  • Teaching portfolio should be limited to 5 pages and include:
    • A brief summary of teaching experience and responsibilities
    • A reflection on teaching philosophy and goals
    • A list of courses and/or trainings taught (including course title, date, number of students, educational background of students), each with a very short description of the course and/or course goals
    • A discussion of teaching / mentoring methods and strategies
    • A discussion on strategies to achieve an effective learning environment for all students regardless of their backgrounds, expectations, and needs
    • A discussion of activities undertaken to improve teaching and/or mentoring
    • A summary of goals and plans for courses you would like to implement in our program
  • Teaching Statement. Write 1-2 pages narrative that includes:
  • A personal vision for teaching and learning
  • A description of teaching strategies or approaches for which you received training or have implemented
  • Justification for those strategies, highlighting how to achieve an effective learning environment for all students regardless of their backgrounds, expectations, and needs
  • A description of the ways in which your professional experience will inform the creation of new courses, enhancement of existing courses, and other educational activities for students.

Department Information

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is one of the largest departments in the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University. We are home to nearly 80 faculty and over 35 dedicated staff members. Approximately 1900 undergraduates are pursuing a degree in either Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering through rigorous programs that feature hands-on, project-based learning. Nearly 300 graduate students are seeking a degree in either Mechanical, Aerospace, or Nuclear Engineering. Our innovative and creative faculty adhere to the philosophy that true innovation depends upon the cooperation of academia, industry, and government working together to advance the goals of science and technology. Our students and faculty regularly collaborate with colleagues in other departments in the College of Engineering and with multiple other colleges across campus. Strong research relationships exist with the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA Glenn Research Center, GE Aviation, Honda of America, and numerous other industrial partners. Department faculty have over $26 million in sponsored research expenditures in areas such as advanced transportation systems (automotive and aerospace), energy and environmental quality, materials and manufacturing, micro- and nanotechnology, nuclear energy, and bioengineering while providing leadership for the Center for Automotive Research, The NSF IUCRC Smart Vehicle Concepts Center, the Aerospace Research Center, the Simulation Innovation and Modeling Center, and the Nuclear Reactor Laboratory.

The Nuclear Engineering program is housed within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and located in Scott Lab, a building with state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. The Nuclear Engineering program is designed to prepare students for successful careers in a variety of specialty areas associated with the application of radiation, radioactive materials, and nuclear fission. Our research is further strengthened by the presence of the Ohio State University Nuclear Reactor Lab. Students work with the faculty on projects for research sponsors such as the Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, NASA, national laboratories, nuclear power plants and others. The Ohio State University also offers an undergraduate minor degree in nuclear engineering.
