Job summary
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an exciting new opportunity for two Lecturers in Structural Engineering and is looking for highly able, enthusiastic, and well-motivated applicants wishing to develop a career in a world leading teaching and research institution.
The Department has an outstanding international reputation and has been awarded the top rating in every national review of university research held since 1986. The successful candidates will join the Structures Section, which is known worldwide for its wide ranging and high-quality programme of research and teaching activities.
We are looking to complement and enhance the Section’s existing research activities. Applicants are welcome from across the breadth of structural engineering and will be expected to demonstrate a strong track record of research excellence and originality and how they will establish a programme of research that can contribute to the transition of the construction industry to net zero. This may include, but is not limited to, new fundamental research, new methods of design and construction, new and emerging technologies, and structural resilience. The selected candidate will also contribute to teaching activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The post is full time and open-ended.
Duties and responsibilities
You will plan, resource, and direct an original and high-quality research programme in Structural Engineering.
You will also:
• Supervise, train and mentor research students and staff with the highest scientific rigour
• Disseminate results through leading international journals and conferences
• Engage with industry and other agencies to identify current challenges for research
• Maintain a leading and prominent role in the research area(s)
You will contribute to the Department’s wide spectrum of Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching through lectures, seminars, course work, tutorials and personal supervision, with a particular focus on the delivery of our MSc courses in Advanced Structural Engineering.
Essential requirements

You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Structural Engineering or a related field.

You will have a developing national reputation and expertise in Structural Engineering.

Experience of preparing or contributing to grant applications for submission is essential.

You must also have an excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research publications, confirming national standing (commensurate with career stage).

Experience of training Undergraduate and Postgraduate students together with supervision of higher degrees (PhD) is desirable as well as collaborations with industrial partners.
