The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at The Ohio State University announces an opening for a tenure-track faculty hire in quantum information science and engineering. The appointment is at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor and is open to candidates using experimental and/or theoretical approaches relevant to quantum information science and engineering.

Position Overview

Applications are invited from candidates with world-class expertise in quantum information science and engineering, which encompasses quantum computation, communication, and sensing. Areas of interest include materials, devices, circuits, algorithms, and quantum simulation. The department seeks to recruit a candidate with a vision to define future directions in quantum information systems. Successful candidates at all levels will have demonstrated world-class research, as evidenced by published work showing high impact in the field of quantum information. Applicants are expected to develop a productive, well-funded, and internationally prominent research program, and be passionate about educating the next generation of engineers in the area of quantum information science and engineering.

The successful candidate will benefit from collaboration with faculty and engage with centers across the university including Center for Quantum Information Science and Engineering (https://quantum.osu.edu)  the Quantum Graduate Interdisciplinary Program (QuGIP), and Chicago Quantum Exchange (https://chicagoquantum.org/about/partners) where Ohio State is a regional partner.

The position is open to applicants who may require sponsorship for a visa or other work authorization.

Performance Objectives

  • Contribute to research activities in the Electrical and Computer Engineering program and develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized externally funded research program in their technical fields.
  • Teach and mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervise students and postdoctoral research.
  • Participate in service to the university and the international research community.

Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD or equivalent in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong commitment to teaching and mentoring commensurate with rank, and demonstrated by one or more of the following
    • experience teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels
    • student and peer feedback on teaching effectiveness, awards for teaching
    • curricular and content development and innovations, textbook and course material development, pedagogical innovations
    • achievements of students advised, progress and graduation of graduate students advised
  • Excellence in research, innovation, and creative output commensurate with rank, demonstrated by one or more of the following:
    • original and impactful contributions to the area of quantum information science and engineering
    • Publications in conferences and journals; patents or similar evidence of technological innovation; citations of published work and/or adoption of research results by industry and academia;
    • Evidence of research funding commensurate with rank
    • Evidence of collaboration with peers within and outside the institution
  • Demonstrated commitment to building a culturally diverse intellectual community, in line with OSU’s Shared Values (see below) and demonstrated by one or more of the following:
    • Leadership in organizations and events that demonstrably broaden participation in computing, especially among historically underrepresented groups
    • Creative pursuits that scale outreach activities, reduce underrepresentation, or foster equity in computing
    • A record of advising, mentoring, motivating, and impacting students from all backgrounds, including students from underrepresented groups
    • Certifications, awards, and professional development related to diversity and inclusion
  • Evidence of excellence in internal and external service and leadership commensurate with rank, demonstrated by one or more of the following:
    • professional activities such as service on conference organizing and program committees, editorships, and reviewing, and reviewing of proposals for funding agencies
    • Invited talks, tutorials, or other professional presentations
    • Effective involvement in department, college, and university committees and initiatives

Desired:

  • A commitment to interdisciplinary education and collaborative research
  • A familiarity working with campus administrators and leaders
  • A track-record of, and strong commitment to, cultivating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment, including in faculty and staff development, hiring, and student recruitment
  • A history of engaging in industrial partnerships and external fundraising
