The M.S. in Sustainable Design Program at Thomas Jefferson University is seeking a new faculty member to join the full-time faculty of the College of Architecture and the Built Environment. The position is for a nine-month, full-time faculty position in the practice scholar, teacher scholar, or tenure track. Academic rank, track, and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The MS in Sustainable Design is an award-winning and nationally recognized program known for its innovative approach to authentic and integral sustainable design of the built environment that was co-created by transdisciplinary experts and award-winning faculty. The program’s design approach focuses on analysis through multiple perspectives, across scales and time. It explores system relationships and leverage points to propose resilient, regenerative, and socially equitable solutions emphasizing design excellence. The program aims to equip graduates with the skills and tools to become innovative, competent, and empathic change agents and stewards of the built environment. The program delivers on-campus and online education for students seeking graduate degrees in Sustainable Design.
Diversity, sustainability, interdisciplinary education, and research are central to the college’s mission. We are seeking 21st-century scholars who have the creative ability to weave together disparate related bodies of knowledge as well as modes of working and thinking in a transdisciplinary academic environment. A portfolio of scholarly inquiry and/or outstanding design work is required, and a trajectory of critical inquiry aligned with the program’s design approach and core values is highly desired. Candidates should have demonstrated successful collaboration and innovation in teaching and must be qualified by education and experience to teach at the graduate level.
Candidates will be expected to teach and develop new critical insights into one or more areas central to the curriculum listed below. Other areas of knowledge, research, and teaching in sustainability beyond the specializations listed will be considered valuable.

The M.S. in Sustainable Design program is located in the College of Architecture and the Built Environment at Thomas Jefferson University. The college is comprised of four departments including Architecture, Interior Design & Interior Architecture, Construction Management, and Sustainable Environments. Candidates must possess one of the following categories of acceptable academic credentials: 1) a terminal combination of a professional bachelor’s and a master’s degree; 2) a terminal professional master’s degree; or 3) a doctorate. At least one of the disciplines for the degrees should be in a built environment discipline with expertise in sustainable design, sustainability, and/or resilience. Foreign equivalents to U.S. degrees are acceptable.
A professional license, as well as LEED, WELL, or other similar credentials, are desirable. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have demonstrated successful experiences teaching sustainable design studios, seminar classes and/or lecture classes in one of the areas listed above. Preference is given to candidates who provide evidence of research through scholarship or critical practice that significantly impacts building practices. Candidates should have classroom experience using advanced digital software and technologies related to the discipline. Candidates with at least three years of professional work experience will be preferred. The ability of the candidate to add intellectual diversity to the department, to work successfully with diverse students and colleagues, and to mentor diverse students and junior colleagues is desired.
