The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) at Arizona State University (ASU) and the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) seek applicants for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in the area of Algae Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering. SSEBE, which is one of the eight Fulton Schools of Engineering, houses a vibrant environmental, sustainable and bio-inspired engineering research community (learn more at https://research.engineering.asu.edu/). We seek applicants who complement our strengths in these areas to solve grand challenges as part of a community of experts.
Successful applicants will have an affiliation with the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) laboratories and outdoor cultivation testbed located at the ASU Polytechnic Campus. AzCATI is a major ASU asset closely affiliated with SSEBE. As AzCATI enters its fifteenth year of existence, we are seeking candidates who will expand the vision and mission of AzCATI to realize the potential for algae biotechnology to produce renewable energy, food, feed and other valuable products, while performing environmental restoration and resource recovery for a more sustainable future. Applicants with expertise and visionary ideas in bioprocess engineering with a focus on systems engineering (harvesting, fractionation, and purification), green bio-manufacturing, and development of full-spectrum products and co-products from building materials to pharmaceuticals, are particularly encouraged to apply.
We seek applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the University to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship, and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools are expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of in-person and online graduate and undergraduate courses in their respective disciplinary domains, advise both undergraduate and graduate student research and projects, and undertake service activities.
Successful candidates will support the mission of SSEBE and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and are expected to participate in interdisciplinary research and teaching endeavors both within and beyond FSE. SSEBE offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Civil, Environmental, Sustainable, and Construction Engineering, and in Construction Management and Technology. The School has 69 faculty members, 1,450 undergraduate and 700 graduate students, and generates annual research expenditures of more than $32 million.
Appointment will be at an open rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2025, but accommodations can be made for the selected candidate
Required qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in engineering or life sciences discipline relevant to algae biotechnology or bioprocess engineering by the time of appointment
- Demonstrated evidence of research capability and commitment to teaching excellence, as appropriate to the candidate’s rank
- Demonstrated ability to procure sponsored research and generate scholarly articles in the interest areas of the search, as appropriate to the candidate’s rank
- Strong written and oral communication skills
Desired qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to a collaborative, transdisciplinary approach to research and teaching
For associate and full professor candidates:
- Demonstrated record of securing external funding for research programs
- Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching that incorporates active learning
