Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Built Environment invites

Open applications for Postdoctoral Researchers in Future Traffic Management

The Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering research group is seeking highly motivated and creative postdoctoral researchers who would undertake research in the area of Future Traffic Management, with special emphasis on transport and traffic systems modelling, also involving multimodal traffic, developing contributions in estimation and control, accounting for the presence of future mobility services and connected automated mobility, and enabled by new technologies such as (mobility) digital twins. The Postdoctoral researchers will join a multidisciplinary team and conduct research on developing novel traffic estimation and control strategies, at local and/or network level, considering the, possibly new, inputs (and outputs) that future systems may have, as well as the presence and interaction of multiple modes to enable seamless mobility. The research will have a strong dynamical modelling and simulation component, where novel data-driven-based models and tools (including machine learning and artificial intelligence) may play a fundamental role, aiming for a more sustainable and carbon-neutral society. The candidates must have a high motivation for advancing state-of-the-art research and enjoy working in an international and cross-disciplinary team. There will be involvement in national and international research projects (funded, for example, by the Academy of Finland or the European Commission), with the opportunity to collaborate with worldwide renowned international research groups.

The position should start by summer 2023 and is intended for full-time work. The selected individuals will work under the supervision of Professor Claudio Roncoli. The successful applicant will have the possibility to cooperate with world-class researchers, as well as to attend scientific conferences and meetings. Moreover, the research group provides strong support and academic freedom, with possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both internationally and within Aalto University. Our group strives to achieve gender balance and the applications will be processed without any bias.

Research areas, requirements, and expectations
A postdoctoral researcher is expected to conduct research in one or more of the following areas:
  • Modelling, estimation, and control of traffic systems
  • Dynamical system modelling and simulation of (network) traffic systems
  • Mobility and network traffic management
  • based modelling and data-driven control applied to future traffic systems
  • Data analytics involving large amounts of heterogeneous data
  • Decentralised and coordinated multi-objective optimisation applied to future transport systems

A prospective postdoc is expected to fulfil the following requirements:
  • Timely completion of a Doctoral degree in a field that is well-aligned with the proposed research interests
  • Knowledge of quantitative methods used in engineering and skills in applying quantitative methods to solve engineering problems
  • Very good programming skills
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Willingness to learn
  • Very good English proficiency

The applicant is expected to:
  • Publish in top journals and scientific conferences
  • Participate in research proposal preparation
  • Organise international scientific events
  • Guide doctoral and master's students
  • If applicable, teach in the master’s programme

Note that a Doctoral Researcher position, with a similar profile, is available at: .

Duration, financing, and salary
The employment contract is for 2 years, with an option for renewal for further 2 years. Currently, the starting gross salary for a postdoctoral researcher is around 3700€ per month and may be increased depending on performance. Working hours are flexible and there is possibility of working remotely for a few days a week. However, presence in Finland for the duration of the contract is compulsory. The contracts include occupational health services, while Finland has a comprehensive social security system. Among European cities, Helsinki is special in being safe, clean and close to nature, with a high quality of life. English is spoken everywhere. For more information about living in Finland:

  • Description of research interests in the next two years (max three A4 pages)
  • CV including publications and contact information for 2 reference persons (max three A4 pages)
  • Summary of the PhD Dissertation (max one A4 page)

All material should be submitted in English in a single pdf-file (compiled in the order specified above). The application should be sent through the Workday system (link “Apply now!” below) no later than 10 February 2023 at 23:59 EET (UTC+2) . Email applications will not be taken into account.
