Tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering 


Position Description:  

The Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MTLS) at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, NMIMT (aka New Mexico Tech, NMT) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The ideal applicant will have knowledge and experience in process metallurgy, applied thermodynamics and electrochemistry in order to teach and conduct research in metals extraction, processing and manufacturing. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The start date is on or about August 1, 2026. 


Department & Associated Research Center Descriptions:

MTLS is the only university materials department in New Mexico, with a long history in metallurgy. The MTLS undergraduate program is ABET accredited, offering a BS degree in Materials Engineering and an option in Metallurgy. The graduate program offers MS, ME and PhD degrees in Materials Engineering.  MTLS has 7 tenured/tenure track faculty and several adjunct and emeritus faculty conducting research in metals and alloys, functional ceramics, nanomaterials, additive manufacturing, sustainable composites, biopolymers, and dynamic, electronic and quantum behavior.  MTLS has many materials process capabilities and state-of-the-art tools for teaching and research, including electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, micro CT and fluorescence, calorimetry and thermal analysis, nano-micro-macro mechanical testing, and direct access to high performance computing.  On-campus research institutes offer unique capabilities and opportunities for collaborative research: The New Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources is charged with the prudent use of the state’s rich geologic resources. The Petroleum Research & Recovery Center solves problems related to the oil and gas industry. The Energetic Materials Research & Test Center has unparalleled capability with dozens of test ranges and safety and ordinance professionals.  Each of these has provided funded projects for MTLS faculty and students. Collaborations with nearby Sandia and Los Alamos National Labs, and Center for Integrated Nano-technologies are common. 


University Description:

Established in 1889 as the NM School of Mines, NMT is a STEM focused, public research institution with an enrollment of about 1600 undergraduate and graduate students. NMT has high national rankings, and tops public institutions for percentage of baccalaureates later earning a PhD. NMT is a federally-designated Hispanic Serving Institution. 


Qualifications:   

  • PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering.
  • Ability to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Materials. Courses in hydro, pyro- metallurgy, materials thermodynamics, transport, are of particular interest.
  • Ability to establish and sustain an externally funded research program supporting students.  
  • Demonstrable verbal and written communication skills, including published research work.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with academic faculty and research center scientists.
  • Ability to support student success and engage students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to professional and academic excellence through service activities.
