PhD and Postdoc on Composite Materials and Structures at Imperial College London

About the Positions

PhD and Postdoc positions are available in the Composite Materials and Structures research group led by Dr Chao Wu (Associate Professor and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow) in the Materials Section of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London (QS Universities Ranking #6), which is the largest and most highly rated civil engineering department in the UK. You will benefit from world-class facilities in the new Imperial Centre for Infrastructure Materials, created and equipped with £5.4M from EPSRC/UKCRIC. Besides, the research projects will build upon existing collaborations with leading academics in the UK and overseas.

You will be working on topics related to polymers and polymer based composites, polymer synthesis, cement chemistry, supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), recycling of FRP wastes, nano polymer composites, molecular dynamics modelling.

About the Funding

The PhD scholarships will provide funding for up to 3.5 years, including tuition fees (3 years) and a tax-free stipend at the standard UKRI London rate, currently £20,622, for 3.5 years. Full funding is available to Home students. The funding can also be used to partly support an international student.

Postdoc positions will be offered based on fixed term contract with a salary range £45,593- £53,630 plus benefits. The first contract will be 1 year and can be renewed based on performance and availability of funding. Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694- £43,888 per annum.

About the Application

Candidates should have an IELTS score no less than 6.5, and MSc and UG GPA no less than 85% min (A+). Those with research experiences in the above mentioned areas are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to have a PhD degree in engineering, science, or equivalent experiences. Basic understanding of materials, mechanics and modelling is essential. The other requirements include but not limited to the ability to communicate effectively via presentations and written publications, well organized and ability to work independently, ability to learn new skills and build relationships with new people in an effective manner.
