Academic Coordinators are appointees who administer academic programs that provide service closely related to the teaching or research mission of the University. This service may be provided to academic departments, to organized research units, to students, or to the general public. Determination of the appropriate level for an appointment for an Academic Coordinator shall take into consideration such factors as program scope and complexity. The duties of an Academic Coordinator are primarily administrative. Individuals in an Academic Coordinator title who are assigned research or instructional duties are required to hold a dual title.

Program Mission:

The Student Farm (SF) is a key component of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI). The SF serves UC Davis students, faculty, and the public with diverse learning, teaching, research, and outreach opportunities focused on sustainable agriculture and food systems. Knowledge and skills are developed in field and classroom settings through formal courses, student internships, scientific experimentation and programs that emphasize experiential learning. The SF is committed to student initiative, agency, creativity, and leadership as critical aspects of developing more just and sustainable agriculture and food systems. Enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion is a goal for all SF activities.

Major Responsibilities:

As the SF Director, the Academic Coordinator (AC) provides administrative, academic, and community leadership to the SF and has primary responsibility for overall SF administration in support of the program’s educational, research, and public service functions. The SF Director contributes to the leadership of ASI, and has primary responsibility for ASI’s Education and Leadership thematic area. The Director guides a collaborative team of staff and students that shape the program over time, centered on student leadership within program planning and execution.


Academic Program Planning and Development
Provide administrative leadership for SF academic programs and key personnel. Lead and guide student-centered processes to set goals and priorities for programmatic activities, staffing, budgetary resources, facilities, and equipment and develop strategies for achieving these goals. Contribute to the leadership of the ASI and guide the integration of the SF into the ASI. Coordinate with and serve as liaison to the College and departments, graduate groups and programs and represent Student Farm programs within and beyond the College and campus.

Evaluation of Academic Program Activities and Functions
Develop and manage the budget and financial resources of the program in collaboration with the ASI Director and the CA&ES Dean’s office. Coordinate and participate directly in the development of extramural resources for program activities. Plan, prioritize and work with staff to coordinate income-generating programmatic activities (e.g., crop sales, fees for tours and public education programs and recharges for research and other services and ensure a balance between income generation and the academic mission of the program). Lead participatory programmatic planning, development and evaluation that engages the SF community and other stakeholders and, as appropriate, working with other units and programs on and off campus.

Supervision and Leadership of other Academic Appointees or Staff
Provide leadership and coordination of SF career staff and grant-funded employees. The SF staff directly supervised include, the SF Market Garden Manager and Educator, the Ecological Garden Coordinator, and the Field Operations Coordinator. Work with employees to set and meet goals and develop strategies for their professional development.

Coordinate with CA&ES staff to provide management, continued development and utilization of the program's lands, built facilities, equipment, tools and other physical resources. When requiring larger equipment or other support, collaborate and plan farming activities and needs with other CA&ES staff responsible for working with field crews and large farm equipment.

Direct and supervise SF staff in developing goals and priorities for public service activities and in obtaining external funds for such activities.

Supervise, coordinate and participate in the development and delivery of culturally relevant educational programs, activities and services by program staff and others (e.g., faculty members who teach) using the program’s resources. Oversee and provide leadership for numerous educational programs and facilities, such as the Market Garden, Ecological Garden, Children’s Garden Program, Student Collaborative Organic Plant Breeding Program, Community Events Team, Food Justice Initiative, and the SF Shop and Composting facilities.

Guide the development of the SF’s informal educational programs (e.g., internships, volunteer opportunities, student employment) to meet the evolving needs of students and teaching faculty, including to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion.


Supervising and Leading Education
Support courses and curricula, including providing classroom and field‐based learning activities in various courses belonging to programs that use the SF for teaching. Support and contribute to the leadership of the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SAF) major, particularly in areas related to experiential learning. Collaborate with faculty developing and offering courses and other educational opportunities, including with the Sustainable Living and Learning Communities (SLLC).

Serve as a member of appropriate graduate groups and on graduate thesis and exam committees. Provides support and work with others to provide coordination for courses that are integral to SF teaching and educational activities, such as Organic Crop Production Practices (PLS 49), and Garden and Farm‐based Experiential Education Methods, (PLS 193). Plan and implement practices that enhance diversity, equity and inclusion in these activities.

Participate in professional societies and conferences, particularly those focused on aspects of sustainable agriculture education.

Coordinate, support and contribute to research efforts at SF, in ASI, and, as appropriate, with on and off‐campus collaborators.

Serve as PI or Co‐PI on educational, outreach and research grants consistent with the mission of the SF.

Formal teaching is not part of AC responsibilities. Therefore, a Lecturer (Unit 18) appointment may be secured for the AC to engage in formal teaching, such as courses in organic crop production (PLS 49) and experiential education methods (PLS 193) that are integral to the SF’s educational programs.


Participate in public service, extension and outreach activities of the SF that aim to enhance community engagement.

Represent the SF, the ASI, the College and the campus to other units within the University, to farmers, docents, master gardeners, educators, public agencies, the private and non‐profit sectors, and the general public with the aims of community engagement and enhancing donor giving. As appropriate, make presentations to the public and collaborate with appropriate partners inside and outside the University to achieve common goals.

Provide oversight of special programs and tours for visitors and board oversight of the Children's Garden, docent tour, outreach, and volunteer programs. Provide guest lectures and field‐based learning activities in various courses. Direct and supervise the program's outreach efforts, including those utilizing printed and electronic methods. Coordinate outreach and service activities of SF and, as appropriate, ASI.


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Masters Degree in Natural Sciences, Agriculture, Education, or related field. Must have degree at start of position.

● Practical knowledge, skills and experience in managing crops or agricultural production systems, including supervising others.
● Demonstrated strong communication skills, including speaking, listening, and writing.
● Skills to facilitate group processes and to foster open dialogue, collaboration, and problem solving.
● Experience facilitating a team approach with shared leadership, decision-making, and management.
● Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds including students, faculty and the public.
● Supervisory skills to help employees to set and meet goals, motivate individual and collective effort, and evaluate performance.
● Evaluative skills to analyze, define, and assess problems, issues, and needs, and identify needed actions.
● Demonstrated skills required for grant writing, fund raising and maintaining donor relations.
● Strong organizational and time management skills to establish goals and priorities, oversee multiple projects, achieve goals, and meet critical deadlines.
● Budget, financial and infrastructure management skills.
