Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Canterbury invites expressions of interest for a 3-year fixed-term academic position in the area of Thermal-Fluids and Energy at the level of Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the USA).
We are seeking a candidate with a background in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, and with teaching experience or potential in these areas. This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to both teaching and research in a dynamic and supportive environment.
The appointee is expected to:
- Teach two courses per year, including:
- a core undergraduate course in Thermodynamics, and
- a final-year elective course in Propulsion (broadly aligned with energy systems and thermal-fluid sciences).
- Supervise final-year honours students and co-supervise Master's and PhD students.
- Undertake independent research and contribute to the department's externally funded research activities.
- Engage with professional and academic service as required.

The ideal candidate will have:
- a completed PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
- demonstrated experience or potential in undergraduate teaching, particularly in thermodynamics
- a developing or established research profile, including peer-reviewed publications.
- interest in contributing to collaborative research, student supervision, and curriculum development.

This role sits within the Academic Staff, Associated Staff and Academic Support Staff Collective Agreement and the following salary scale applies: Lecturer $92,334 - $111,388 p.a.
