Research Associate in Transportation Engineering (Salary: 55K-75K/year)

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is a doctoral/research intensive university and Wisconsin’s premier public urban institution. UWM is one of the nation’s top 131 research universities (R-1 status) as recognized by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Operating within the College of Applied Science and Engineering (CEAS), UWM’s Institute for Physical Infrastructure and Transportation (IPIT) (https://uwm.edu/ipit/) is looking for a highly motivated research associate to lead transportation research. The new hire will work under the direct supervision of the institute Director, Professor Xiao Qin and Associate Director, Mr. Mark Gottlieb, former Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation; and work with IPIT affiliated faculty and graduate students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently conduct research to investigate or resolve identified research problems and complete required tasks
  • Write research reports and papers
  • Contribute to or lead in the preparation of research programs and grant applications
  • Supervise graduate/undergraduate students on projects

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. degree in transportation engineering, urban planning, or related field
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Evidence of ability to independently conduct research
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Crash modeling and Safety Data Analytics. Demonstrated research experience in developing conventional and novel safety models, esp. crash frequency models; in-depth knowledge of the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) and safety data (not limited to crash data).
  • Smart transportation system operations and management. Demonstrated research experience in one or more areas of traffic data integration and information fusion; public transit planning and operations; mobility-as-a-service; connected and shared mobility; urban mobility data analytics; modeling and simulation of transportation system dynamics.
  • Hands on programming experience with web development, python programming experience in big data processing, database design, operations and management (e.g., SQL/MySQL), and data visualization.

This is a full-time 12-month position. Salary ranges from $55,000 to $75,000 which is commensurate with successful candidate’s background and experience.
