Prof. James McDonald at the University of Ottawa welcomes applications for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join a collaborative project with the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories focused on the development of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies for the real-time visualization of the radiation-field in decommissioning nuclear environments.

One of the most challenging tasks during decommissioning of nuclear plant assets is the removal of radioactive components which could pose severe health and environmental hazards. Performing such operations require the development of detailed decommissioning plans that rely on accurate knowledge of the radiation field in the facility environment. Leveraging VR/AR for decommissioning operations could help improve operation planning, minimize risk to workers and equipment, and ensure conformance with radiological protection principles.

Given that the state of a facility being decommissioned can change over time, and many procedures are one-time operations that have not been practiced by operators, the ability to simulate dangerous tasks within virtual environments is progressively becoming an essential part of the training for decommissioning operators.

The overarching goal of the research project is to investigate and develop faster and more reliable tools for the visualization of the dynamic radiation-field reconstructed with sophisticated computational techniques and in-situ collected radiation measurements.

In collaboration with other researchers, the Postdoctoral Fellow will focus on developing the AR/VR hardware and software to support this goal. The project provides the opportunity to contribute to the development of xR techniques that would be tested in an active nuclear decommissioning environment, and thus they will have a significant real-world impact.


  • Applicants with strong background in development and implementation of AR/VR technologies, including software development, are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Candidates should have a PhD degree in Engineering, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Computational Physics, Computer Science or related field.
  • Previous experience with AR/VR developments related to radiation visualization and/or nuclear decommissioning would be considered an asset.
  • Experience writing scientific code in modern C++ is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and writing abilities in English are required.
  • The position has no teaching requirement and is available immediately.

The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding.
