The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Transportation Engineering, available in August 2026. Candidates applying for this position are expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels and a demonstrable research capability that will enable them to develop an externally funded, independent research program and publish in leading scholarly journals. The successful candidate will be primarily located on the Scott Campus in Omaha with teaching responsibilities on both Lincoln and Omaha campuses. They should be prepared to collaborate with colleagues, develop new research initiatives, and participate in ongoing research projects.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering consists of approximately 36 faculty members, 485 undergraduate students, and 105 graduate students with two ABET/EAC accredited undergraduate curriculums and advanced programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil and environmental engineering on the Omaha and Lincoln campuses.
The College of Engineering is undergoing an exciting period of significant growth as part of the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The college has hired more than 85 new faculty in the last five years and plans to continue expanding the number of faculty in the coming years. The college boasts over 230 faculty, serving programs on the City Campus and East Campus in Lincoln and the Scott Campus in Omaha. We are expecting the successful candidate to help shape the future of this organization as it becomes established among the elite engineering programs in the country. Qualifications
Applicants must have both a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field prior to the start date of the appointment. Expertise in transportation planning, traffic engineering, transportation operations, transportation safety, transportation sustainability and resilience, transportation data science, connected and autonomous vehicles, smart infrastructure, or logistics is required.
Preference will be given to applicants with a B.S. and/or a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering; a strong record of scholarly achievement in the area of transportation planning, transportation safety, transportation sustainability and resilience, traffic engineering, transportation operations, transportation data science, connected and autonomous vehicles, smart infrastructure, or logistics; relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience; and a strong record of grant applications and funding.
