Tulane University, one of the nation's premier research institutions, invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time Assistant Professor position starting Fall 2026 within the Department of River-Coastal Science and Engineering (RCSE). This hire supports RCSE’s growth as a transdisciplinary center for water-nexus scholarship spanning civil and environmental engineering, hydrology, geosciences, and ecological sciences. We encourage applications from scholars who will complement and expand our existing strengths and foster cross-disciplinary collaborations across the river-delta-coastal continuum. The goal of our expanding faculty group is to conduct interdisciplinary research and to develop innovative approaches to educate the next generation to tackle complex problems associated with human interactions in the river-to-ocean realm. More information about RCSE’s mission and our growth to date can be found at https://sse.tulane.edu/river.

The Department’s unique position, housed with the School of Science and Engineering (SSE), provides exceptional opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and supports the development of cutting-edge research and educational initiatives at the intersection of river-coastal science and engineering and the broader STEM fields. SSE is distinctive as the only academic unit at a major research university to merge the behavioral sciences, physical sciences, life sciences, engineering, and mathematics, which provides an unusually rich environment for innovative programs and interdisciplinary research.

Tulane University  is a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as an R1 (Very High Research Activity) and Community Engaged university. Tulane University offers a collaborative environment for interdisciplinary interactions, a strong public service theme, and a commitment to science as a major thrust of research, scholarship, and education.

The successful candidate will:

  •  Establish and sustain an externally funded research program in one of these two Civil Engineering discipline areas: environmental engineering (with a focus on water and wastewater treatment and/or environmental remediation) or structural engineering in the river or coastal setting
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate classes to support our newly launched Civil-Engineering – Water and Environment undergraduate major and our thriving graduate programs
  • Guide and mentor undergraduate and graduate researchers in water nexus science and engineering
  • Participate in professional service and outreach activities within Tulane and in the global community
  • Participating alongside the RCSE faculty in growing a nationally recognized, water-related civil engineering program

Qualifications

RCSE is seeking applications from candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Strong interest and demonstrated potential for convergence research in water science and engineering
  • Field of interest in environmental engineering or (riverine and coastal) structural engineering
  • Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering with focus in one of these two areas a) water and wastewater treatment, and/or environmental remediation, or b) structural engineering in the river or coastal setting, or a closely related field, by the start date
  • Post-doctoral or demonstrated research experience beyond the Ph.D. is preferred
  • Licensed Civil Engineer or intent to obtain licensure within four years
  • Desired start date August 1, 2026

Application Instructions. Review of applications will be confidential. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, with review beginning January 1, 2026. Candidates should upload the following materials to Interfolio https://apply.interfolio.com/176435:
