Fully funded Postdoc or PhD positions are available in the Sustainable and Autonomous Concrete Lab directed by Prof. Yi Shao. The application deadline is Aug 1, 2024. Application guidance can be found at https://www.shao-lab.com/opportunities

Starting date: The postdoctoral scholars are expected to start on Sep 1, 2024, or soon after. The initial postdoc appointment will be 1 year and will be renewable for at least another year, depending on satisfactory performance. The PhD candidates are expected to start in the 2025 winter or 2025 fall admission. 

Qualification: Postdoctoral scholars require a PhD degree in structural engineering and a publication recording demonstrating experience in relevant fields. PhD candidates require a GPA above 3.6/4.0 for both BS and MS degrees in structural engineering. 

Project description and duties: The candidates will work on projects related to understanding the structural behavior and developing structural design methods for 3D-printed Concrete. The candidates will use optimization tools to optimize the 3D-printed concrete structural design. The main tasks will involve conducting a literature review, designing and optimizing specimens, designing and executing experimental programs, analyzing data, and writing reports and academic papers. Postdoc scholars are also expected to assist with grant writing, lecturing, and graduate student mentoring (tasks that are useful for your faculty application!). 

Our lab is committed to creating new solutions for reducing the environmental impact and labor demand of building concrete infrastructure. Current projects focus on developing durable and resilient structural systems that minimize material and labor usage. Our research tools include the development and application of high-performance materials (especially Ultra-High Performance Concrete, UHPC), nonlinear finite element methods, innovative structural systems, topology optimization, and digital construction methods.
