Research theme area:
Transdisciplinary approach to tackle global challenges.

Abstract:
The candidate will collaborate with researchers from the project 54 of the FAPESP-Shell Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation of POLI-USP at the University of São Paulo. Summary of the program and projects can be found at the RCGI website (https://sites.usp.br/rcgi/).

The project “Improving pasture management as NBS for soil carbon sequestration in Brazil” is based on the relevance of improving pasture management systems for soil carbon sequestration and, consequently, climate change mitigation, because some of the Brazilian government’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitments are related to restoration over 15 million ha of degraded pastures.

The post-doctoral student's contribution will be divided into three concurrent phases:

1. preparation of specific bibliographical research on the legal, political and regulatory aspects in the development of studies on livestock farming as nature-based solutions to climate change

2. Qualitative research with experts from within the RCGI advocacy network to build an outlook of possible scenarios: fearful, probable and desirable in regulatory terms.

3. Research for collaboration with the writing of the United Nations Global Environmental Outlook

Description:
The applicant will contribute in line with the main objectives of the project:

Obtain total or partial answers to the following questions:

What are the legal, political and governance challenges in developing grassland restoration as a form of nature-based solutions to climate change?

How might the interrelationships of environmental issues and energy, food, material/waste systems change in the future, and what pathways and scenarios might lead to environmentally sustainable futures, building synergies and minimising unintended consequences?

Can internationally agreed environmental targets be met?

How are the socio-economic impacts of the transformation of energy, food and material/waste systems distributed differently between countries at different levels of economic and social development, fossil fuel dependency, resource dependency and vulnerability to climate change?

How can countries deal with the unequal or distorted effects of these socio-economic impacts and how, in the case of Brazil, does livestock have a role to play?

Articulate with technicians and academics to collaborate on a reference work to be published by the RCGI on the topic: Pasture recovery as a nature-based solution to climate change: legal, political and governance challenges

Requirements to fill the position:
This project would be well-suited to a highly motivated candidate requiring Programming skills, HPC experience, qualitative research in the field of governance, politics, law, education and international relations, experience in Advocacy and proficiency in English are required.

- The postdoc candidate should hold a PhD in areas correlated to the performance of the tasks required to fulfil the tasks required by this scholarship.
