Research theme area:
This research is part of the RCGI project - 64 GHG project - D.1, which has the title: “Greenhouse gas emissions in the Amazon and data analysis system and services”. This postdoc project will develop an interdisciplinary research in the areas of computer sciences, geostatistics and atmospheric sciences.

Abstract:
The candidate will collaborate with researchers from the project RCGI project - 64 GHG project - D.1 of the FAPESP-Shell Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation of POLI-USP at the University of São Paulo. Summary of the program and projects can be found at the RCGI website (https://sites.usp.br/rcgi/). The Amazon rainforest plays an important role in the global carbon balance and regional climate. Deforestation can influence the climate through changes in the pattern of evapotranspiration, emissions from fires, and a decrease in the capacity to remove CO2 by vegetation. On the other hand, climate can influence the dynamics of land use changes, for example, favouring the occurrence of deforestation in drought events. This project aims to characterize the associations between land use, meteorological variables, and concentration of atmospheric pollutants in the Amazon, combining data from remote sensing and reanalysis models in an integrated and standardized database. Factoring and grouping techniques such as EOF (empirical orthogonal functions), cluster analysis, and longitudinal regression analysis with linear mixed models will be applied. With this, we intend to evaluate the relative importance of atmospheric variables contributing to deforestation and vice versa.

Description:
The applicant will contribute in line with the main objectives of the project:

  1. Study the processes that regulate greenhouse gas emissions in Amazonia
  2. Investigate associations between land use change and climate in Amazonia

Requirements to fill the position:
This project would be well-suited to a highly motivated candidate requiring Programming skills, geostatistics and experience in the field of atmospheric science and remote sensing. Proficiency in English is required. The postdoc candidate should hold a PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Computation, Meteorology or Geosciences.

INFORMATION ABOUT FELLOWSHIP:
This Postdoc fellowship is funded by FAPESP. The fellowship will cover a standard maintenance stipend of R$ 9.047,40 (Reais) per month.
