Doctoral candidate position in Smart Mobility and Connected Vehicles

A full-time doctoral candidate position in the area of smart mobility and connected vehicles is available in the Department of Built Environment, at the School of Engineering, Aalto University. The doctoral candidate position is fixed-term, available from October 2018, and filled initially for one year with an option for extension until the end of 4-year PhD studies. Research context
Advances in in-vehicle sensing, processing, and communication technology in the last decades are enabling rapid development of connected vehicle technology and related smart mobility services. This represent an attractive opportunity to develop future methodologies and technologies aiming at improving the performance and efficiency of vehicles, accounting for traditional and novel indicators, the in-vehicle experience of users, as well as the performance of the overall traffic system, both at local and network level.

The doctoral candidate will join a multidisciplinary research project and conduct research on analysing and modelling the implications of intelligent vehicles on traffic flow on roads and networks, with the aim of developing novel traffic management strategies. The research will have a strong modelling and simulation component, based also on empirics wherever possible using our instrument vehicles. The doctoral candidate will be encouraged to cooperate with colleagues within Aalto University, but also across the world. In particular, she/he will have opportunities for research collaboration with peers from TU Delft, Virginia Tech, and UC Berkeley.

Requirements
A prospective student should have a Master’s degree in one of the following (or related) fields:
- Transportation Engineering;
- Electrical/Communications/Mechanical Engineering;
- Computer Science;
- Statistics/Mathematics/Physics;
and must be accompanied by an in-depth understanding of her/his field of expertise, excellent programming skills, fluency in English, experience with scientific writing, skills for active reporting, and interaction with other project members. Special emphasis in the evaluation will be placed on modelling and analysis skills.

In a maximum of four years, the doctoral candidate is required to 1) complete the doctoral dissertation based on peer-review publications (accepted and submitted), 2) finish relevant courses for 40 ECTS credits and 3) participate in teaching.
