The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at California State University, Long Beach invites applications for two open faculty positions at the Assistant Professor rank, in the areas of Aerospace Systems Design (#2587) and Thermal-Fluids Engineering (#2590). The effective date would be August 17, 2020. The Department offers BS and MS degrees in both Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and participates in a Joint Doctoral program with Claremont Graduate University. Applicants for these positions will complement and/or expand areas of existing research into emerging areas of research.
AEROSPACE SYSTEMS DESIGN
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering or closely related discipline. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2020. Specialization in Aerospace Systems Design, including, but not limited to: aerodynamics and CFD; aircraft and rocket propulsion; aircraft and spacecraft control; astrodynamics and space mission analysis; and aerospace structures and materials. Demonstrated commitment to be an effective teacher at the undergraduate and graduate level. Demonstrated potential for record of research, scholarly and creative activities. Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in or potential to teach courses in the area of Aerospace Systems Design, undergraduate and graduate-level courses. Demonstrated ability to develop courses, laboratories, and academic programs; update curriculum; and supervise student theses and projects. Active participation in academic governance. A record of academic publication and research activity commensurate in one of more of the emerging areas of aerospace engineering, with application to the design of aircraft, unmanned aerial systems, satellites, launch vehicles, and/or space missions. Demonstrated success or history of effort to obtain external funding for research. Commitment to actively support the success of underrepresented groups in STEM fields.
Duties:
Teach introductory and area of expertise-related subjects at undergraduate and graduate levels in, or related to, Aerospace Systems Design, as well as undergraduate fundamental courses in aerospace engineering, as needed by the Department. Collaborate with colleagues in curriculum development and program assessment. Maintain an active research program involving students and leading to peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations. Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research. Actively pursue external support for research through grants and contracts. Participate in service to the department, college, university, profession, and community.
THERMAL-FLUIDS ENGINEERING
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related discipline).
Degree award at the time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2020. Specialization in Thermal-Fluids Engineering, or a closely related area. Demonstrated effectiveness for teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Demonstrated potential for successful research, scholarly and creative activities. Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in teaching courses in the area of Thermal-Fluids Engineering
at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Demonstrated ability to develop courses, laboratories, and academic programs; update curriculum; and supervise students’ theses and projects. Active Participation in academic governance. A record of academic publication and research activity in one or more of the emerging areas of conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer. Demonstrated success of history of effort to obtain external funding for research. Commitment to actively support the success of underrepresented groups in STEM fields.
Duties:
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Thermal-Fluids areas as well as undergraduate fundamental courses in mechanical and aerospace engineering. Develop new courses and laboratories; update existing courses; supervise student projects and theses; write grant proposals and seek research funding; conduct independent and collaborative research leading to publication and external funding; participate in service to the department, college, university, and community.
