The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering NCSU/UNC (BME) in collaboration with the Marsico Lung Institute (MLI) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has an open tenure track faculty position in the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor.

The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering NCSU/UNC (BME) is a supportive and collaborative environment, and we welcome candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. The joint department integrates the exceptional strengths of the UNC Chapel Hill College of Arts & Sciences and School of Medicine and the NC State University College of Engineering. Our mission is to improve human quality of life, personal and work environments, and rehabilitation products and processes through careful study, analysis, research, and design of innovative technologies to benefit the people of North Carolina, the nation, and others whom we serve.

The Marsico Lung Institute (MLI) is a multidisciplinary research institute in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Specific areas of research within MLI include genetics, mucus biochemistry and biophysics, cell biology, pharmacology, ion transport, animal model system, microbiology, transplantation biology, and translational therapeutics.

The current position has been created to investigate critical features of the protective airway surface layer that lines the respiratory tract and serves as the first line of defense against inhaled pathogens. The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering and MLI seeks to greatly improve our understanding of the function of this layer in both health and a spectrum of muco-obstructive pulmonary diseases such as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, primary ciliary dyskinesia, non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and asthma. We seek outstanding candidates conducting research in: (1) Mucus Biophysics, (2) Mucin Biochemistry, (3) Motile Cilia Dynamics, and (4) Mucus layer / Bacterial Biofilm Interactions. Competitive candidates in other areas related to biomedical engineering will also be considered. Successful applicants will have already established a highly competitive independent research program or will have otherwise demonstrated the clear potential to do so. The candidate must collaborate with basic researchers across BME/MLI and with clinical investigators in support of translational research projects within the MLI.

The selected candidate will have a primary appointment with the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering NCSU/UNC and membership with the Marsico Lung Institute at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a tenure home in the School of Medicine, UNC-Chapel Hill.

Qualified candidates should have a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Biochemistry, or related areas, and have demonstrated excellent capability for scholarly activity. Preferred candidates will be able to contribute to undergraduate and graduate student education, with the possibility of teaching classes in the areas of biological physics, controls, biomedical instrumentation, fluid mechanics, physiology, or related classes.

Salary: commensurate upon experience and/or qualifications.
