Departmental Overview

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the Berkeley campus reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research. SSL's primary goal is to foster research in space-related sciences and to provide education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL, led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space as well as theoretical and basic research.

The Role

SSL is looking for a Systems Engineer to join the UVEX project. The Ultraviolet Explorer (UVEX) is NASA's next Astrophysics Medium-Class Explorer mission. UVEX will undertake a synoptic survey of the entire sky in the near-UV and far-UV, probing the dynamic universe with a sensitivity more than 50 times better than GALEX. SSL will manage the UVEX mission including providing Project Systems Engineering. The successful candidate will join this team and contribute to the development of this exciting new space based telescope. Experience in Systems Engineering is required and with another science focused NASA mission is preferred. Applicants should have a speciality in a technical domain such as optical design, RF engineering or mechanical systems. UVEX has only just been selected and there is an opportunity to join a project at the formulation stages. Candidates with strong technical and hands on skills are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Provides professional engineering information and advice to UVEX Project Systems Engineer and management in area of Systems Engineering.
  • Consults and collaborates with the UVEX Principal Investigator (PIs), scientists and engineers to design the UVEX spacecraft.
  • Carries UVEX system engineering responsibility covering relevant engineering specialties engaged at the mission level.
  • Develops specifications for UVEX parts procurements; works with other research organizations in the development of the component.
  • Coordinates work at other research institutions and reports to NASA technical review teams.
  • Designs Systems and Ground Support Equipment where needed for the UVEX program.
  • Performs the recording and reduction of test data for UVEX design and evaluation purposes.
  • Gathers, analyzes and prepares information and reports with respect to feasibility, engineering design criteria, and performance of their components for the UVEX missions.


Required Qualifications

  • Thorough skills in the design, development, and construction of space systems, including one successful aerospace product.
  • Specialist in at least one discipline
  • Thorough systems knowledge of all engineering specialties in order to integrate at the mission level.
  • Thorough skills in supervising lower-level professional engineering and technical staff to ensure objectives are met in adherence to quality standards.


Education / Training Requirements

  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training


Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate level course work in related area preferred.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The full pay scale for this position is $117,000.00-$226,000.00.
