The F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) in the Pigman College of Engineering at the University of Kentucky invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in biomedical engineering at the level of Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. Applicants should have earned a Ph.D. in an Engineering discipline with demonstrated accomplishments and experience to warrant an appointment at the level of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.

The position is available beginning January 2024. The ideal candidate will engage in vigorous research that applies engineering principles to solve healthcare challenges in an area that complements the current faculty expertise in the department. Areas of particular interest are (i) biomaterials/tissue engineering, (ii) biomechanics, (iii) medical imaging, and (iv) AI/bioinformatics; other areas of biomedical engineering, both experimental and computational, can be considered as well. Women and other candidates under-represented in engineering are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and maintain a robust externally funded, globally recognized research program at the University of Kentucky, and actively participate in the teaching and service missions of the University.

Candidates with demonstrated accomplishments in areas of research/scholarly activity, teaching and service comparable to a tenured Associate Professor in the department could be considered for tenure immediately. Candidates for Associate Professor will also have a record of instruction and engagement in delivery of undergraduate curriculum. Previous experience or interest in serving as director of undergraduate studies would be considered a plus.

The University of Kentucky is one of only a small number of U.S. institutions having a major academic medical center with all six health sciences colleges and the full spectrum of academic colleges on a single campus. BME is located centrally within the Pigman College of Engineering and within walking distance of the Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, Design, Business, etc. The University is in Lexington, a city of 300,000 residents in the heart of the rolling hills and horse farms of the Bluegrass region of central Kentucky, an area consistently rated among the best places to relocate and raise a family. The cost of living is low compared with most major metropolitan regions in the U.S. Recreational opportunities (e.g., hiking, cycling, horseback-riding, fishing, hunting, and boating) are enjoyed by many residents. The local arts community focuses on Appalachian music, country dance, and crafts. Cincinnati and Louisville are each a 90-minute drive away.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a research plan (upload under Specific Request 1), teaching statements (upload under Specific Request 2), and contact information of at least three references when prompted in the academic profile. Application review will begin on October 15, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.

The University of Kentucky is committed to a policy of providing equal employment opportunities to all candidates regardless of economic or social status and will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnic origin, national origin, creed, religion, political belief, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, or age.
