Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identify and solve grand societal challenges and build an innovative future. Aalto has six schools with nearly 12000 students and a staff of more than 4000, of which 400 are professors. Our campuses are located in Espoo and Helsinki, Finland.
The School of Electrical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. Our portfolio covers fields from natural sciences to engineering and information sciences. In parallel with basic research, we develop ideas and technologies further into innovations and services. We are experts in electronics, electromagnetics and radio communications and radar systems; we develop enabling and groundbreaking solutions for smart living environments and cities. The school is an international unit with close to 60 professors and 2 100 full-time students, including over 200 doctoral students.
Are you looking for a doctoral candidate position in the field of next-generation electronics? The Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering is looking for a talented and highly motivated
Doctoral Researcher in the field of Organic Electronics
The research group in Organic Electronics develops materials and organic devices with the scope of developing next-generation electronics. By using organic molecules, we can develop a novel class of both materials and devices capable of addressing current and future challenges in low-cost and flexible electronics. The group was established in Spring 2019 and is led by Ass. Prof. Caterina Soldano.

Job description
In this position, you will have the opportunity to conduct experimental research in both materials and device physics. The work is expected to result in high impact scientific publications and communications at national/international conferences. The main research work will be carried out in the field of organic transistors and light-emitting devices, with a particular interest for the general understanding of the device properties as well as the overall development and improvement of the performances. In particular, organic light-emitting devices (transistors) are a rather yet largely unexplored technology platform, holding tremendous potentials both in terms of fundamental studies as well as technological applications. Large efforts are expected to be devoted to study physical phenomena as charge/field-effect transport and light emission/sensing, with a particular interest for new materials and material’s interface. The PhD training will include study of materials properties, device fabrication and optoelectronic characterization, using state-of-the-art facility available in the Organic Electronics Lab and Aalto University facilities (Micronova).
Requirements
You have a master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field. You are highly motivated in experimental science and scientific activity, such as publications in peer-reviewed journals, and experimental activity in fields such as material characterization and/or device fabrication is required.
You have:
- MSc degree in Physics, Material Science (or a closely related field)
- Good written and oral communication skills in English
- Experience in carrying out independent project-based work and working in a highly collaborative environment
- Experience in materials characterization and/or device fabrication
- Experience in thin-film electronics and characterization is highly desirable.
In this position you will apply for the study right for doctoral studies at Aalto University. Thus, please check
the student information and
application criteria. Please pay attention to the mandatory skill level in English. More information about becoming a doctoral researcher at the School of Electrical Engineering can be found
here.
Salary and contract
The starting salary for a doctoral researcher is approximately 2600 €/month and salary will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. Our target is that you will acquire the doctoral degree in four years. In the beginning the contract will be fixed term for two years and it will be renewed for two more years. The contract includes occupational health benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The preferred starting time is flexible but no later than Summer 2023.
