In the Science, Engineering and Technology Group of KU Leuven, Faculty of Engineering Science, Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), research unit ESAT-STADIUS there is a full-time academic vacancy in the area of data-driven computational modelling of dynamical systems in health and industry on campus Arenberg. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record and with educational competence within the field of computational data-driven computational modelling of dynamical systems in health and industry.
ESAT-STADIUS (STADIUS Center for Dynamical Systems, Signal Processing, and Data Analytics) is a research unit in the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) (www.esat.kuleuven.be) of KU Leuven (www.kuleuven.be), joining educational and research activities of 12 senior academic staff and 100 PhD and postdoctoral researchers.
ESAT-STADIUS pursues excellence in an explicit and synergistic combination of fundamental and applied research. With core concepts from linear and multi-linear algebra, statistics, optimization, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, its fundamental research is focused on the development of mathematical engineering tools and numerical algorithms. Building upon this foundation, applied research is geared towards putting these tools and algorithms into motion in order to advance the current state of technology across a wide range of relevant application fields, including industrial automation and control, speech and audio signal processing, digital communications, biomedical data analysis and signal processing, bioinformatics and systems biology.
ESAT-STADIUS attracts competitive research funding through regional, national and European funding channels, such as the European Research Council ERC (currently ‘Advanced-’, ‘Consolidator-’ and ‘Starting Grant’) (www.esat.kuleuven.be/stadius/projects.php). In addition, ESAT-STADIUS has a large number of collaborative projects with industry, which has also resulted in several spin-offs (www.esat.kuleuven.be/stadius/spinoffs.php ).
The research activities of ESAT-STADIUS are in the wide domain of mathematical engineering. Starting from fundamental research and insights in (multi-)linear algebra (matrix and tensor decompositions), numerical algorithms are developed for data-based dynamical system modeling, with linear (such as subspace identification) and machine learning approaches (such as least squares support vector machines). These models are used for control, prediction, monitoring, anomaly detection, etc. The resulting algorithms are deployed in a wide range of ‘big data’ settings, namely decision support platforms with applications in industry 4.0 and health 2.0.
As a new PI in ESAT-STADIUS, your research program will align with this background and tradition, and you will be given the opportunity to establish a personalized, impactful strategic basic research program in mathematical engineering, that should lead to applications in aforementioned areas.
Within this targeted area of research, your research program provides evidence of originality and promise. You will strive for excellence in your scholarly research: publish at the highest academic level, initiate national and international collaboration, obtain competitive research funding, attract and supervise doctoral students. You will endorse the international research strategy and contribute to the further strengthening of the scientific reputation of ESAT-STADIUS.
You are willing to provide high-quality teaching in the Bachelor and/or Master programs of the Faculty of Engineering Science, including mathematical engineering courses, and will be committed to the quality of the programs as a whole.
You will also contribute to the university’s pedagogical project by supervising master’s theses and as a supervisor of PhD candidates.
You will develop your teaching in accordance with the KU Leuven vision on pro-active, research-based instruction and you will make use of the opportunities offered by the university to further professionalize your teaching.
You prepared to take responsibility for administrative and management tasks in ESAT-STADIUS, in the department and faculty, as well as to provide scientific and societal services.
You have a MSc and PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent degrees.
You have a strong research profile within the aforementioned research domain and have international research experience. The quality of your research is proven by publications in international leading journals and conferences. Teaching experience is an asset.
You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context.
A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.
The language of KU Leuven is Dutch. If at the time of recruitment you have no or insufficient knowledge of Dutch, KU Leuven will provide you with a training program to learn Dutch to the required level.
