The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology (FBCET) at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA, invites applications for a senior-level faculty position at the rank of full professor in bioelectric engineering. Exceptionally qualified applicants will be considered for an endowed appointment. The anticipated start date is Fall 2026.

We strongly encourage applications from candidates with a foundation in bioelectrical engineering, biomedical engineering, biophysics, or related fields, with a particular emphasis on those conducting research in nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEF). Priority will be given to candidates whose work intersects bioelectrics with one or more of the following areas: Medical Imaging and Diagnostics, Drug/Gene Delivery, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Electrotherapy and Neuromodulation, Neural Interfaces and Brain-Computer Interfaces, Cancer Treatment, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in bioelectrics-related research.

Research outcomes are expected to impact local and regional communities, potentially leading to groundbreaking therapeutic strategies that result in more effective treatment advancements for cancer and neurological disorders.
The home department for this position is the ECE department. The selected candidate will also hold a core faculty affiliation with the newly established Institute for Engineering in Medicine, Health & Human Performance (EnMed) and the Frank Reidy Research Center for Bioelectrics (FRRCBE), which advance bio-related research and education across the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology. The EnMed Institute administers the Biomedical Engineering programs, and the selected candidate is expected to play a key role in supporting its mission and growth.
Successful applicants will be expected to:
  • Develop and sustain an externally funded research program
  • Teach electrical engineering/biomedical engineering courses to a diverse student body
  • Advise students
  • Perform service obligations including serving on committees
  • Successful applicants can collaborate with faculty members in ECE, FBCET and the university with complementary expertise, including those in the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences which includes the Eastern Virginia Medical School.
 
Candidates should exhibit a strong track record of establishing and maintaining a productive, high-impact research program, as well as effectively mentoring graduate students. They are also expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with a portfolio of distinguished research published in reputable journals and conferences recognized nationally or internationally. Additionally, candidates should have a substantial record of scholarship within an academic setting that supports both undergraduate and graduate programs. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with a proven ability to secure external funding, are essential for this role.
