The Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in "Water and Wastewater Technology" to be held in the Department of Civil and Resource Engineering and working closely with the Centre for Water Resources Studies (CWRS). The appointment will be a tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research and supervise graduate students in the Civil and Environmental areas, and to develop, lead and grow a strong, externally funded research program.
While applications in the area of water and wastewater technologies will be considered, preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated qualifications and experience in wastewater treatment. The CWRS has long-standing partnerships in Nova Scotia with many stakeholders including Halifax Water, NS Environment, and many private industries. Accordingly, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in managing complex water research projects in the lab, at the pilot-scale, and at full-scale water and wastewater systems. The successful candidate should have demonstrated ability to work with stakeholders and industry partners. The candidate will be expected to secure funding from granting agencies such as NSERC to further build the program. Demonstrated success in securing peer-reviewed grant funding will be an asset. Given the growing field of wastewater surveillance, experience in monitoring wastewater for COVID-19 or other health-related issues will be a valuable asset.
Over the past 10-15 years, the Department of Civil and Resource Engineering and the CWRS have established an international reputation for leading water research. The ideal candidate will be expected to build on this reputation and to develop a new area in the field of wastewater treatment, management and surveillance. Over the course of the CRC, the candidate will collaborate locally, nationally, and internationally with leading engineers and scientists to tackle this global challenge. Accordingly, it is anticipated that the research initiated out of this program will address a regional need but have broad global impact and directly address SDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities; and SDG 14: Life Under Water.
The candidate will be a key team player in the CWRS that currently hosts NSERC Industrial Research, Canada Research Chairs and a NSERC CREATE program and annually boasts more than $2.0M in research expenditures as a cluster of faculty members. The CWRS community would work with the candidate through academic mentorship, active collaboration, and participation in new and existing research activities. The CWRS community is networked across many professional and academic organizations including: the Atlantic Canada Water & Wastewater Association, the Canadian Water Network, the International Water Association, etc. The CRC program was established by the Canadian Federal Government with the purpose of attracting outstanding researchers to the Canadian university system. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., the candidate must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from their highest degree and where career breaks exist (including maternity leave, extended sick leave, etc.) may have their eligibility for a CRC Tier 2 assessed.
