The Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department at Utah State University (Logan campus) seeks applicants for a full-time academic year (funded for 9 months) Professional Practice Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) position. Applicants with the appropriate credentials will be considered at the rank of professional practice associate or full professor. The position is open until filled, with an anticipated start date of January 2024. The primary responsibilities are developing and teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in aerospace engineering. Duties include in-person and online instruction and curriculum development in the undergraduate- and graduate-level aerospace engineering courses or other relevant courses as assigned by the department head. The position requires a Ph.D. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or a closely related field, and a broad range of knowledge in mechanical and aerospace engineering topics.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Duties include in-person and online instruction and curriculum development in the undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in aerospace engineering, or other relevant courses as assigned by the department head. 90%
  • Actively participating in assigned committees, including curriculum and accreditation assignments. 5%
  • Other duties as assigned by the department head. 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or a closely related discipline relevant to the department.
  • Effective teaching or mentoring experience.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills

To be considered at the professional practice associate or professional practice professor ranks, candidates must also meet these qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of professional experiences after receiving the PhD degree.
  • Evidence of success in effective teaching or mentoring.

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who have:

  • Additional industrial, academic, or research lab experience in aerospace engineering.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching or mentoring experience.

The MAE department has experienced significant growth over the past decade, with enrollments of approximately 800 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, and is the largest department in the College of Engineering. The department offers MS and PhD degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. The department currently has 17 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 4 professors of practice, with additional part-time instructors from local industry and research institutions. Faculty research areas include fluid dynamics, combustion and propulsion, flight mechanics, space dynamics, advanced materials, controls, and systems engineering with research expenditures in recent years about $3M. Successful applicants may have opportunities to work closely with scientists and engineers from the USU Research Foundation Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), one of 14 Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers (UARC). Further, USU faculty also have access to the University of Utah Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) facilities and the Utah Water Lab. USU is the nearest PhD-granting institution in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering to the Idaho National Laboratory, and is also in close proximity to Hill Air Force Base and other defense related organizations.
