Professor of Biomedical Engineering/Director, Master’s Programs

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia in the School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks a Director of Masters Programs to develop and direct new programs in Medical Device Design and Biomedical Data Sciences designed to prepare students for careers in biomedical industry. We envision cross-disciplinary programs that take maximal advantage of the Department’s close ties to the School of Medicine and leverage existing interdisciplinary efforts including the Center for Engineering in Medicine (https://engineering.virginia.edu/research/centers-institutes/center-engineering-medicine), the Data Science Institute (http://dsi.virginia.edu), and the Center for Design and Health (http://cdh.arch.virginia.edu). Duties will include developing and directing new programs and courses, as well as teaching 1-2 courses per semester and mentoring student project teams. Compensation for this full-time or part-time academic general faculty on the practice track (AGF) is contingent upon experience.

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent experience in Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline, extensive industry experience and have held leadership positions and earned national and international recognition consistent with an appointment as an Associate Professor of Practice or Professor of Practice in Biomedical Engineering (http://uvapolicy.virginia.edu/policy/PROV-004). The incumbent must also have a demonstrated track record of teaching and mentoring engineers. Experience in entrepreneurial or start-up environments as well as in established biomedical device or data companies is preferred, as is prior teaching experience in relevant academic programs.

General Faculty receive departmental support for their teaching and scholarship activities. This position will have renewable three-year contracts, with future funding dependent in part on the ability to develop robust, sustainable academic programs.
