The Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Missouri College of Engineering (https://engineering.missouri.edu/departments/chbme/) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level, beginning August 1, 2026.

We are seeking creative, collaborative scholars who are ready to build an externally funded research program at the forefront of advanced materials that address pressing societal challenges in energy, environmental sustainability, and human health, and who are equally committed to excellence in teaching and mentoring.

Ideal candidates will bring both intellectual curiosity and impact-driven vision - inspiring students in the classroom and laboratory, and contributing to a collegial, inclusive departmental culture.

Research areas of particular interest include:

  • Polymeric materials
  • Materials for nuclear and energy technologies
  • Hybrid or multifunctional materials with tailored properties

We are especially interested in candidates who integrate computation, data science, or machine learning to accelerate materials discovery, design, or analysis.

Our department is growing in both size and scope and benefits from strong campus resources, including the new Energy Innovation Center, the MU Research Reactor (MURR), the Materials Science and Engineering Institute (MSEI), the Electron Microscopy Core, the NSF-NRT on Data Science for Materials Research, and the NextGen Precision Health. This position will strengthen the department’s leadership in materials innovation and deepen its integration into emerging technologies across multiple application domains.

We're proud to be Missouri’s flagship public research university and a Carnegie R1 institution. As one of only six public universities nationwide with colleges of engineering, medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture, arts and science, law, and a research reactor all on one campus, we offer unmatched opportunities for interdisciplinary research and impact.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, or a related discipline.

Candidates will be evaluated on:

  • Research focus in polymeric materials, materials for nuclear technologies, or hybrid/multifunctional materials.
  • Strong record of scholarly productivity and evidence of potential for externally funded, nationally or internationally recognized research program.
  • Experience in effective teaching or mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Ability to teach and develop innovative and inclusive courses in related emerging technologies.
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and service to the departmental, college, and university.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.

Application Materials

In addition to filling out the online application please be prepared to upload:

  • Cover letter describing your interest in the position and how your expertise aligns with departmental strengths and university priorities.
  • Research and Scholarship Statement (not to exceed 4 pages).
  • Teaching Philosophy Statement (not to exceed 2 pages).
  • Curriculum Vitae including all scholarly publications and record of extramural funding (as applicable).
  • Names and contact information for three references (references will be requested only after a candidate is invited for on-campus interview).
