Position Description

McMaster University’s Faculty of Engineering invites applications for two teaching-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Computing and Software; however, exceptional candidates may be considered at the rank of Associate Professor. The position will be located on the main university campus to begin on July 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter.

The Department seeks to recruit two excellent teachers with interest and experience in experiential learning and innovative ways of teaching computing. We value candidates who will be effective role models for our increasingly diverse student body. Successful candidates will be expected to:

• Teach introductory undergraduate courses in Computer Science and Software Engineering.
• Contribute towards the delivery of the Department’s undergraduate programs, e.g., by mentoring Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering students and introducing new teaching techniques.
• Participate in the ongoing development of curricula for our Computer Science B.A.Sc. program, Software Engineering B.Eng. program, and Mechatronics Engineering B.Eng. program.
• Provide leadership for improving teaching effectiveness throughout the Department.
• Develop a pedagogy-related research program in computing.

Registration, or eligibility for registration, by the Professional Engineers of Ontario is required. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The successful applicants will hold a PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.  Alternatively, applicants will hold a doctorate in education, with a focus on computing. The applicant must also demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching, reflected in outstanding teaching records, and a willingness and ability to contribute to the department’s collegial and collaborative intellectual community as well as university-wide inclusive excellence goals and priorities.  Applicants are expected to have demonstrated successful pedagogical research, or to show potential for successful pedagogical research.  

The Department of Computing and Software is one of the top departments for Computer Science and Software Engineering in Canada. We have 41 faculty members with expertise in computer systems, software engineering, theoretical computer science, security, privacy, machine learning, data analytics, scientific computing, and bioinformatics. The department mentors over 1700 undergraduate students in three programs: computer science, software engineering, and mechatronics engineering. It also mentors more than 180 graduate students in masters and doctoral programs in computer science and software engineering.
