JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY The Robotics Engineering Lab Manager is responsible for all aspects of Robotics Engineering (RBE) undergraduate lab organization, preparation and configuration. In conjunction with the assigned student Lab Assistant staff, this individual works to ensure that necessary materials, setups and work areas are properly configured to facilitate timely and efficient course presentation and student activities. This position must take steps to gain a clear understanding of course requirements and flow, be able to work effectively with faculty and apply management skills to guide and mentor student assistants. In addition, the candidate must trouble-shoot and problem-solve as needed to ensure that the environment, setups and materials are functional and well-suited to the needs of the courses. Further, the candidate will act as Chair of the RBE Facilities Committee, take a leading role in space planning ensuring effective usage of available resources.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsibilities:
- Maintain RBE Lab Spaces to ensure a safe and orderly environment, keep the various equipment and devices in good operating condition.
- Act as chair of Facilities Committee, organize and run meetings as needed, follow up as appropriate.
- Assist faculty in materials procurement and preparation, including demo arenas, kit generation and oversight.
- Manage student Lab Assistant staff, provide assignment, mentorship and oversee activities.
- Review and develop hardware and software used in courses, using appropriate tools and materials. This includes items such as robots, arms and other devices that are provided to students for use in the courses.
- Keep track of all materials, ensure timely delivery of suitable items. This includes creating and maintaining a clear tracking methodology of inventory control.
- Purchase lab supplies.
- Update teaching lab hardware. Help faculty members with new solutions and make new prototypes when needed.
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
Requirements:
- Minimum 4 Year / Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent
- Minimum of 5 years of experience
- High School graduate with experience in electromechanical design, fabrication, assembly, and testing. Bachelor's degree or equivalent in engineering or technology field, with 5-10 years relevant experience highly desirable.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Experience in inventory management and procurement.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to work productively with a wide range of people.
- Ability to communicate and translate technical ideas or abstract visions with students of multi-cultural backgrounds and differing skill levels.
One or more of the following is desired:
- Experience in the design and fabrication of robots, electromechanical systems, mechatronic systems, or similar.
- Experience designing and implementing embedded software for robotics applications.
- Experience in the setup, maintenance and troubleshooting of PC, laptop, server, and networking hardware.
- Experience with Microsoft Windows and Ubuntu Linux operating systems and the Robot Operating System.
- Experience designing and producing 3D printed components using a common CAD package (SolidWorks preferred).
