Assistant Professor - Biomedical Engineering


Position location: Kingston


Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Biomedical Engineering starting in Fall 2025, salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. We are particularly interested in candidates with research expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI), focusing on Neuro and Rehabilitation Technologies and their applications in healthcare, including but not limited to neuro-rehabilitation, wearable technologies, neuro-robotics, brain-computer interfacing (BCI), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) in rehabilitation, and biomedical big data.

A PhD in biomedical engineering or closely related field is required at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to teach ELE 201 Digital Circuit Design (or other electronics course), as well as develop and teach new undergraduate and graduate courses while conducting high-quality research in neural and rehabilitation engineering.

The Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island offers programs leading to the BS, MS, and PhD degrees. Our BME faculty conduct research in, neural signal processing, neuro-instrumentation, neuro-robotics, neuro-modulation, wearable health systems, digital health, medical image and signal processing, physiological modeling, and assistive and rehabilitation technology. The interdisciplinary nature of our Department will provide the new faculty member with opportunities to interact with a broad range of colleagues. A new 195,000 square foot engineering building has been inaugurated and provides an excellent environment for interdisciplinary research collaborations.

The interdisciplinary nature of this position will provide the new faculty member with excellent opportunities to collaborate across departments such as: Computer Science and Statistics, Communicative Disorders, Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Nursing, and Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The University of Rhode Island is a partner in the George and Anne Ryan Institute for Neuroscience (https://ryaninstitute.uri.edu/) and the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program (https://web.uri.edu/inp/) which recently started an undergraduate program (https://www.uri.edu/features/neuroscience/). Ongoing collaborations currently exist with research hospitals and industries in the Providence and Boston areas. Optional opportunities to teach courses in electrical engineering or computer engineering will be available.
