Project title:
Development of structured Re/TiO2 catalysts towards the scale-up of CO2 conversion into methanol

Research theme area:
Carbon Capture and Utilization

Abstract:
The candidate will collaborate with researchers from the project “Development of a scale-up process to convert CO2 to methanol under supercritical conditions” of the FAPESP-Shell Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation of POLI-USP at the University of São Paulo. Summary of the program and projects can be found at the RCGI website (http://www.rcgi.poli.usp.br/).

Description:
The goal of this position is to perform the scale-up rhenium-based catalyst. For that purpose, we are going to use an extrusion approach to develop a ReOx/TIO2 pelletized catalyst. This extrusion could be performed either with a conventional extrusion technique or with a 3D printing technique. In both cases the judicious choice of the extrusion conditions, such as, paste rheology and nozzle geometry should be performed in order to obtain high quality pellets. Moreover, the porosity of the calcinated pellets should be also taken in account during the fabrication. This could be achieved by adding different types of molecules during the paste fabrication process. The impregnation of the pellets with ReOx should also be optimized in order to obtain suitable catalysts that are able to achieve a high conversion of CO2. This step could be performed in batch or using a high-pressure flow process.

Requirements to fill the position:
This project would be well-suited to a highly motivated candidate with PhD in chemistry, chemical or materials engineering or in any related subject, solid expertise in in extrusion techniques preferably with ceramic materials, Solid knowledge in XRD, BET on determination of surface tension and viscosity and on SEM and TEM. Knowledge in catalyst synthesis will be considered a major asset. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team, good organization skills and ability to work under pressure with tight schedules.

INFORMATION ABOUT FELLOWSHIP:
This Postdoc fellowship is funded by FUSP. The fellowship will cover a standard maintenance stipend of R$ 8.479,20 (Reais) per month.
