The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track position in immune engineering to promote human health. The position will be within the Case School of Medicine at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level.

Case Western Reserve University is a private research university located in Cleveland, Ohio. The university, associated with 16 Nobel laureates, includes the Department of Biomedical Engineering, which is jointly housed in both the schools of Engineering and Medicine. Ours was one of the pioneering BME programs in the world (founded in 1968). After forming the BME Alliance with the Cleveland Clinic (currently ranked the #2 hospital in the country) we grew to 55 primary faculty, 28 of which are tenure-track. We are also within walking distance of University Hospitals of Cleveland and the Cleveland Stokes VA Hospital making this one of the riches engineering/clinical hubs in world. We currently have 220 graduate students and approximately 500 undergraduate students. Our faculty are international research leaders in biomaterials, nanomedicine, imaging modalities, neural engineering, and computational imaging and personalized diagnostics. The BME department is home to the endowed Case-Coulter Translational Research Partnership. This resource is a recognized national leader in promoting translational research and supporting collaborative translational research projects to improve patient care and accelerate the delivery of healthcare technology from academia to the marketplace.

We seek outstanding candidates to establish an internationally recognized, competitively funded individual research program in cellular and molecular engineering research AND who have a strong vision for future research within our rich community. The research areas of interest include but are not exclusive to: (1) vaccine development to modulate autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, (2) gene editing and gene therapy targeted at immunomodulation, (3) microbiome genome/epigenome engineering to promote control of the immune system, (4) biomaterial-mediated approaches to facilitate immune regulation, and (5) general plans related to multiple systems biology tools, such as proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, and immunology. The candidate should be committed to and/or experienced working with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students.

Clinical translation is a major goal of our program, so previous experience working on clinical applications is strongly preferred. The community at Case Western Reserve University is highly collaborative, and thus a demonstrated background in team science is preferred. A doctorate in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related Science/Engineering field is required.  The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the undergraduate and graduate training mission of the department, and to engage in departmental, institutional and professional service activities.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, copies of three representative journal papers statements on (1) research accomplishments and plans and (2) teaching and mentoring plans and (3) the names and contact information of at least four professional referees. Any questions can be sent to bme-immune-engineering@case.edu.  Evaluation of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
