    Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in Architecture Construction Management


    The School of Architecture at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UH Manoa) seeks an energetic and accomplished full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor, with specialization in critical design practice and construction management. The school seeks candidates who can demonstrate knowledge of current, advanced design and construction management practices and applied research that exhibits broad understanding of the relationship of design thinking and making disciplines, as well as strong teaching abilities and demonstrated effectiveness in studio instruction with an emphasis on undergraduate teaching. This appointment will begin in Fall 2024 and will be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor. Specific duties will include:



    1. Teaching studio and elective courses in the areas of construction management, building systems, construction practices, and code compliance.

    2. Develop new courses leading to the creation of an undergraduate degree in construction management and graduate certificate and undergraduate certificate in construction management.

    3. Coordinate with the UH College of Engineering’s Department of Construction Engineering in the development and sharing of courses and resources.

    4. Work with both local and other firms to create opportunities for internships, periodic support, and eventual employment of program graduates.

Ample opportunities exist for robust interdisciplinary research collaboration with faculty from here collaborating with Engineering as Natural Sciences, Urban Planning, and other disciplines. The School of Architecture places emphasis on both theory and practice among its strategic priorities, which address regional and tropical issues as instructive models for complex global problems.


    Duties and Responsibilities
    This full-time, 9-month faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor includes responsibilities for teaching, research, creative work, thesis advising and service. The School of Architecture seeks candidates who can help advance, strengthen, and coordinate the design curricula of the undergraduate BEnvD program.


    The successful candidate will engage in the undergraduate BEnvD program (Buildings Systems, Materials, Tectonics, Code, Construction) and take initiating leadership in the development of a proposed undergraduate Construction Management program in cooperation with Honolulu Community College (HCC), other two-year programs, and UHM’s College of Engineering.  The position will allow the School of Architecture an opportunity to offer a Graduate Certificate in Construction Engineering as well as possibly a future master’s degree.


    The successful candidate will be expected to develop effective pedagogies for studios and technical courses with a focus on architectural tectonics and building science. This includes fundamental skills ranging from design conception, communication, form/space, structures, materials to fabrication, construction, prototyping, experimenting, hands on design knowledge from concept design, design development, construction documentation, bidding, to construction administration. The faculty member will be expected to teach across the curriculum at all levels. The candidate will also be expected to supervise Doctor of Architecture theses.  Candidates with international architectural project experience, especially in the Asia Pacific region, are preferred.


    The school seeks candidates who will complement the skills of the faculty at the School of Architecture, able to contribute to all SoA programs and willing to serve in leadership roles.


    Minimum Qualifications:



    1. Candidates must have a minimum of a professional Master of Architecture (MArch) degree or professional Master of Architecture (MArch) degree in combination with a Master of Civil Engineering.

    2. Additionally, before application for tenure, documentation of a professional license to practice architecture and / or practice civil engineering is required of candidates.

    3. Applicants must demonstrate excellent design, construction, communication, and collaboration skills; the ability to maintain a vigorous program of research and/or creative work; the potential to advance their discipline(s); a commitment to applied design and critical construction inquiry and impact, and teaching with a demonstrated knowledge of both lectures and architectural design studios.


    Desired Qualifications:



    1. The school especially welcomes candidates with experience in professional practice, a body of work demonstrating excellence or additional professional or post-professional degree(s) focusing on design related to critical construction and  its management in a global context with Hawai‘i.

    2. Construction Management Associate of America (CMAA)certification would be a benefit.

    3. Preference will be given to applicants with an established record of teaching design studios and with experiences in design build, beginning design course development, studio coordination, and curricular alignment.

    4. Applicants with a record of teaching Indigenous students and/or interested in Indigenous perspectives in design are particularly encouraged to apply.

    5. Desired expertise beyond critical construction and design fundamentals includes but is not limited to design research and practice at the intersection of architecture and landscape architecture, urban design, engineering, theory and criticism, ecological design, and environmental design in the technological, ecological, ethical, social context of an era of unprecedented challenges and opportunities of re-constructing and managing the future.


    Salary range: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
