    Position overview Position title: Assistant/Associate Project Scientist
    Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the following table for the current salary scale(s) for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2024-25/july-2024-scales/t38-b.pdf. The current base salary range for this position is $93,700 -$122,400. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

    Percent time: 100%

    Anticipated start: October 2024

    Position duration: One year initial appointment, with possibility of reappointment subject to performance and continued availability of funding.

    Position description

    The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California Berkeley seeks an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist to work with Professor Ramamoorthy Ramesh on energy efficient computing using spintronics. The project scientist will synthesize model thin film systems, carry out structural and electrical measurements. The candidate will publish papers in peer reviewed journals, give talks at key conferences and attend program review meetings to present the findings. The candidate will also collaborate with other faculty and their students/postdocs, on campus, LBNL and other academic entities.

    Day to day duties for this position includes:
    a. carrying out thin film oxide synthesis.
    b. device fabrication and design
    c. carrying our magnetotransport studies
    d. carrying out structural studies.
    e. partial oversight of other students and postdocs
    f. writing up papers for publication

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    PhD or equivalent international degree.

    Preferred qualifications



    • PhD in condensed matter physics or materials science

    • A strong background in spintronics is essential.

    • The ability to comprehend and analyze the fundamentals of spin transport is essential.

    • Ability ot set up, carry out and interpret complex spin transport data is essential.

    • The ability to synthesize complex materials using pulsed laserb deposiiton and/or sputtering, carry out structural measurements is required.

    • At least 3 years of postdoctoral research

    • Strong interpersonal skills are desirable.
