    About the Department/College

    The Yuma Branch Campus of Northern Arizona University in Yuma, AZ is located on the grounds of Arizona Western College and serves a vital and growing local and regional community. NAU-Yuma has a primary role in providing a wide range of bachelor and graduate degrees in the Lower Colorado River region of Arizona and California with approximately 500 students on campus and an additional 1500 students engaged in distance learning programs.

    The Department of Mechanical Engineering, that is part of the College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences, offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. These include Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET accredited), Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering - in-person and online options, PhD in Mechanical Engineering, and PhD in Bioengineering. The Department also supports an Interdisciplinary PhD degree in Engineering Sustainable Systems In collaboration with the School of Environment and Sustainability. The Department currently has approximately 600 students and 15 faculty.

    About the Position

    The Mechanical Engineering Department seeks candidates for the position of Lecturer or Assistant Teaching Professor on the NAU Yuma campus. The selected candidate will report to the Mechanical Engineering Department Chair, will teach courses and laboratories, and will provide technical assistance and maintenance to all instructional laboratories within the department. The Department has five brand new laboratories at NAU Yuma that are used to teach electrical circuits, statics and mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and manufacturing (subtractive manufacturing). The selected candidate will operate experimental equipment available in the Mechanical Engineering laboratories, maintain the existing experimental and fabrication equipment, and learn how to operate equipment to be acquired in the future. The selected candidate will carry out routine machinery/equipment maintenance and repair, perform new equipment installation, and fabricate prototypes using the available fabrication equipment. This position will be considered the expert technician within the Mechanical Engineering Department and will be the go-to person for all educational lab equipment malfunctions.

    Teaching Responsibilities:



    • Teach at least two upper division Mechanical Engineering (ME) courses or the laboratory equivalent.

    • Maintain office hours and direct interaction with students.

    • Remain current in their discipline, updating course content when appropriate.

    • Work with the ME Department faculty to develop and implement processes and tools for assessment of teaching and student learning outcomes incorporating appropriate methodologies and technology.



    Lab Manager Responsibilities:



    • Provides technical assistance to students in all Mechanical Engineering laboratories.

    • Responsible for the maintenance, repair, inventory, physical security, and reporting of the engineering laboratory equipment associated with the laboratory and/or temporarily used in classrooms, and other related areas.

    • Support student success in applying both learned classroom and technology skills associated with the engineering laboratory through demonstration, monitoring of equipment use, and performance of instructional activities.

    • Supervises and trains student workers supporting all lab activities.

    • Provides expert advice on fabrication feasibility of proposed projects submitted by faculty for instructional or research support.

    • Operates all of the equipment available in the Department's laboratories and, when appropriate, trains others on how to use the equipment.



    This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at the NAU Yuma campus, with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

    This is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track faculty position.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Lecturer



    • MSc in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field conferred by start date.

    • A minimum of 3 years of College level teaching experience.

    • Minimum of three years of experimentation, machining and project management experience.

    • Minimum of five years of broadly diversified experience in a variety of positions involving complex, applied technology such as science projects, aerospace, nuclear power or sophisticated instruments.



    Assistant Teaching Professor



    • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field conferred by start date.

    • A minimum of 3 years of College level teaching experience.

    • Minimum of three years of experimentation, machining and project management experience.

    • Minimum of five years of broadly diversified experience in a variety of positions involving complex, applied technology such as science projects, aerospace, nuclear power or sophisticated instruments.



    Preferred Qualifications



    • Minimum of three years of industry experience.

    • At least 5 years of College level teaching experience.

    • Demonstrated experience in running experimental or fabrication-oriented facilities.

    • Demonstrated maintenance experience with fabrication machinery.

    • Demonstrated training experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD) as well as CNC milling, CNC turning, and CNC programming.

    Commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

    This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
